Buzzing From Front End
Hey Guys, Thought I had it fixed. Front squeal / buzz sound. Replaced both front wheel bearings and she still has the 25- 40 mph squeal/buzz. Hit the breaks the noise stops for a bit. Must be something with the brakes or brake adjustments. Give me some ideas where to look, please. 1977 911

could be a sticking caliper. get a infrared thermometer and see if one of the rotors is significantly hotter than the other post drive. have you ever rebuilt the calipers?

It is likely the water pump!
![]() Have you ever replaced or checked the rubber brake hoses? As they age the insides can swell and look perfect on the outside, but restricted on the inside. They will not allow the brake fluid back out of the calipers and it ends up with a slight squeeze on the rotor. If your rubber hoses are old, change all 4 of them. And of course do a brake fluid change at the same time.

Last year, my front was making a groaning sound that would stop when I tapped the brakes. Sticking RF caliper was causing the pad to ride on the rotor and not retract properly. Worked it back and forth & was okay for a while.
Started acting up again this year, so I just got finished rebuilding the front calipers, replacing the flexible hoses, replacing pads and repacking the wheel bearings. Dirty job, but the pads are now backing off the rotor like they should. Fun job blowing the pistons out of the caliper bores, but it's doable. I expect the rear calipers to need attention next... may try to get away with just replacing the flex hoses. In blowing thru both old and new flex hoses, I see some restriction on the old ones. I'm thinking my main problem was a little corrosion on the pistons. Order the proper assembly grease from Latvia (BREMSZYLINDER)... fleabay lists it; get new flex hoses & rebuild kits & rear grease seal if you're repacking the bearings from Pelican and have fun! Don't let it go too long or it may lock up on you. To make sure it's your calipers, jack up the front end and give the wheels a spin... they should move freely with no drag.

Just re-read your post. Since you just replaced the wheel bearings, you may need to recheck the tightness on those axle nuts. Too loose or too tight maybe? Some people thing you really need to tighten them down to keep the wheel from falling off, but end up ruining the bearings. Revisit the tightening procedure for front wheel bearings for your car if it doesn't appear you have a brake pad dragging problem.

I am experiencing this as well and the buzz/squeal goes away for a short time if I move the steering wheel right and left and zig-zag the car. Then it comes back. I have smelled 'brakes' from the right front after a drive so I now assume it's a RF pad hanging up. Replaced all of that back in 2013 though.

Like the man said...
old brake hoses can cause the pads to fail to retract, so you get a buzz or squeal you need to replace the hoses every 10-15 years anyway, so now is the time |

Yep, I will repeat myself. New brake hoses are cheap, and need to be done anyway. Perfect time to changee the brake fluid. Do all four rubber hoses. You have nothing to lose and lots to gain.
