Kevin,
I have a '90 3.6L engine installed in my '74 911 and have used the check engine light to read codes via a procedure outlined in the 964 Workshop manual. I have most of the Patrick Motorsports conversion wiring harness which has a provision for the check engine light - see the single, loose green wire in the first photo below. It also has a provision for a code reader, but I do not have easy access to one and am not even sure if it would work for early 3.6L engines. I wired the green wire to a light and followed the procedure outlined in the second attached image... you have to read the long vs. short blinks and then look up the code of the corresponding number - which I'm fairly certain is the 3rd to last column in the 3rd attachment... I did this a while ago and don't exactly remember how it all goes to be honest, but it DID work for me. I got the "All is good" code... Hope this is helpful & best of luck troubleshooting!
