Local source for threaded clips vs ordering

I need two of the clips as shown in the schematic below to mount my tail light. I know I can order them from Pelican, etc. but would like them today/tomorrow as I have my them out and so can't drive without them.

Assume these are regular clips and can be purchased anywhere or do I need something special? Anyone happen to know what size they might be?

Thanks in advance.

Here's what the one out of the car looks like. It is stripped.

I think they are called "captive nuts". Buy a $.99 thread checker at the hardware store and measure up the bolt size. You might be able to find the nut in the specialty bins at the hardware store.

Perfect. Thanks.

July 4th...........

Do you know what day is today? I doubt you will find any hardware store open today. It is July 4. Most people are at home resting and celebrating our Independence Day celebration or on vacation. Maybe tomorrow (Friday) you could visit your FLAPS and get lucky. For the meantime, relax and enjoy the BBQ & beer. Good luck.

Tony. Happy 4th to you. I'm not much of a shopper but all the big box stores are open today. It's a retail sales thing.

speedracer92 07-04-2019 12:26 PM

Yep, happens to be one of the largest shopping days actually. All the big boxes and auto parts stores open it seems. Unfortunately, I am in Retail so our stores open as well, I just happen to be able to work from home today :D Easier for me to enjoy my 4th when I can take a spin in my car! Thanks.

Chances are it is is either an m6 or m8. You might find a "u" nut in that thread size

speedracer92 07-04-2019 02:12 PM

Thanks. Went to 3 different FLAP and all they really had were the ones with just bent metal - no threaded of any size (cause I could change the bolt). The one that I showed in my 2nd post seems to be an M5 because I had one that worked on it. M6 won't go through the tail light housing. don't want to drill it. Looked at amazon also but hard to tell what would fit, etc. so will just order I think and do it right, once. Frustrating that no place carries fasteners really anymore - but with the Internet - know they can't stay profitable for few sales...

It’s a 6 mm J nut using a Phillips screw head.

Remeco or other fastener place will have them. You must have a fastener store somewhere near you in Texas.

I used square nylon threaded license plate bracket nuts to replace the corroded and stripped metal captive nuts. They popped in, don’t spin, and will probably outlast the rest of the taillight housing.

Those pieces are available through the dealer as well; that's where I got mine. I couldn't find anything even remotely similar at any hardware or fastener places here.

The clip portion is steel which will corrode fairly easily, which is why I needed to replace mine as it got bad enough that it broke while running out the screw. The threaded part is bronze I think.

Thanks for all the responses. I don’t have any of the original clips except that one, so need those in addition to the J nut. Didn’t think about a fastener shop (duh) so will find one of those but in the end, ordering off Pelican may be choice.

My notes list the screw as a 5mm x 20mm pan head phillips.
McMaster has an assortment of captive nuts - https://www.mcmaster.com/clip-on-nuts.
These are known to seize up over time, so you may be drilling out the screw head one day.

If its important or helpful, I can dig up the part number off the parts I got from the dealer for you.

Try your local auto body supply - paint shop, they usually have a large supply of trim clips and nuts and such.

tirwin 07-04-2019 08:44 PM

Some people also call them cage nuts.

That would be great. Assume its a different number than the one on the schematic?

Thanks. Around here, they don't carry much at all. A lot online. Need a fastener Place I think...and none open on 7/4 but will try today...
