Hit a bump and POP!

Took the car on a drive on HWY 49 near Placerville along the American River, and while going uphill in third, I hit some bumps and it popped out of gear. It was just starting to lug and I was reaching over to downshift as it came out of gear. This is the first and only time it happened.

The car has always shifted smoothly in and out of gear, no grinding. However, the linkage would occasionally, bind. I have a short shifter and Seine Systems gated shifter, also, a Wevo coupler and motor mounts. I've been on this forum since buying the car about 17 years ago, and read a few threads on worn syncros. Hoping, this isn't the problem. The trans is a 1985 like my car. Just before I bought it, the previous owner had replaced all the syncros. I have the receipts.

I'm aware the issue could be either of the above. But, I changed the tranny fluid every 2 years and never seen metal flakes. So, the other issue might be the linkage. I've never really been happy with the adjustment of the coupler. It took me all day and then a week later, I was tweeting it again. It shifts good but I've always thought it should shift a little better.

I plan on trouble shooting the linkage again and changing the fluid. But, feel I could do a better job making shifting more precise and would appreciate some tips. Maybe it was just a fluke, going over bumps, up hill in one gear too high. But, the more serious problems might be just around the corner.

I know there are other threads on this issue.

Any advise will help and be appreciated.

Gary

Sounds like an adjustment issue.
Try pulling a fraction of an inch out of the coupler to seat the rod deeper into the first and third detents.

Thanks for the advise, I think that would help and I'll give it a try. Today pulled the shifter and lubed the ball cup and bushing that supports the rod. Didn't seem that long ago since the last lube. But, everything was dry. Just got back from a test drive, it sure made a difference.

Next week end I'm changing the transmission fluid and will look for metal. Probably, will use Kendal gear oil that many have recommended. Been using Royal Purple synthetic, will switch to non synthetic.
