Why are there 2 brake light switches?

My brake lights have stopped working on my car. I see from previous posts that the switches on the MC are a common fault and easy to replace. But, does anyone know why there are 2 switches on the MC? I am guessing its a fail safe method in that if one fails the other should work. When mine failed I had no lights on the dash that came on or anything - any thoughts? Many Thanks Richard

Rich, I think you'll find it's one switch per brake circuit, don't forget we have dual master cylinders. Cheers

Hi Tim, Do i need to change both switches then? Or could it just be one causing the problem? Regards Rich

I replaced them both 'while I was in there', they are cheap.
