1975 2.7 running to hot timing problem????

running hot can't seem to get the timing marks to line up without the distributor rotated all the way clockwise, if the cam timing was off would it start so easily and run correctly??

Mine ran hot until I added a fender mounted cooler.

You’re distributor is one cog off inside the motor.
Set Z1 on #1 cylinder
Remove nut on dist.
Lift up until the rotor is free to spin.
The rotor turns clockwise.
Reset rotor to leading edge lines with mark on edge of the distributor.
Reset the dist. You should line up with more adjustment available.

Have already rotated the drive gear and to get it timed the dizzy has to be rotated to the opposite end of the adjustment range

Mine ran really hot when I first got it. The timing was retarded, the fuel mixture was off, some air hoses were loose allowing cooling air to escape the proper path and I had a 5 blade fan. One of the things I did was to remove the alternator/fan and notice that the engine cooling fins were coated with oil/dirt. It took a fair amount of diesel sprayed in there to loosen the grease followed by steam cleaning to remove the loosened gunk. That dropped the temps another 20 degrees. It ran much cooler after proper timing, proper fuel mix, tightened air hoses, engine clean from above and 11 blade fan. Then I got the trombone cooler which dropped the temps some more. I seldom go over 210 these days. If you don't have a trombone cooler I have an extra.

What Flat6pac said. The dizzy hold down nut should be about the middle of the adjustment space.
How hot is too hot?

Those hand held point and shoot thermometers are really helpful. You may have a mismatch between the temperature sender and the dash mounted temperature gauge, giving you a false reading.

Rick,

Your picture shows the vacuum line still attached. It's 5 deg ATDC with the vacuum line disconnected (and plugged) at idle, and 32 to 38 deg BTDC at 6,000 RPM. With the vacuum line attached, you're probably closer to 10 deg ATDC at idle. Checking the more important 6,000 RPM timing would help show if there is an issue.

check your engine thermostat in the triangle of death, if it not working it will keep the oil in the engine and not release enough oil to the tank . Just an idea

Is your engine mounted oil cooler nice and clean? Any crud buildup will greatly reduce the effectiveness of it.

I would also check the tops of your cylinders and heads. You can check it all by pulling heater ducts on front of engine by fan.

The oil cooler will have a gray cover on it. a few bolts and it lifts off. Its much easier done with partial engine drop.

The vacuum line is disconnected at timing.and not needed to set timing.
Setting time at idle should be before TDC, 5 degrees +/-
Vacuum line is a retard for ignition and should ONLY have vacuum at idle
How does it run with vacuum hose plugged?
