On your new 3.6L its above the flywheel below the air intake behind the pressure sender. On your old 3.0l its to the right of the fan. (rear of the car, front of the engine)

If you are referring to the one that controls the temp gauge, it is below and to the right of your fan - just under the A/C bracket. You will see a small round canister - that is your oil pressure sending unit and just to its left, you will see the temp sending unit. You can remove it with an offset wrench.

So will a backdated sender (for a numeric gauge) fit in a '97 993 motor?

here is a pic, the oil pressure and oil temp senders are in the red circled area

There are 2 versions of the sender one for '74-76 and another for '76-89 either will screw into the fittings

Fantastic Bill. Thanks. Now to see if I can get to it.

In order to get a little ground clearance, my motor is mounted a little high. I can BARELY get the flat palm of my hand through to the trrottle body. The sender may be quite an adventure!

A partial drop is highly recommended to get at them. That's why they need to be tended to before installation. Ask me how I know this

So now you tell me! Looks like I'll be adding that cylinder head temp gauge.

Moses and Bill, does the 993 sending unit you reference control the druck pressure and idiot light? Does it have 2 connections or one? The one on the SC only has one, so where does the other go to? I replaced mine with one that was supposed to work (not a 964 part) and my Druck pressure is double. Ingo thought that maybe a resister would correct the problem.

I thought the temp sending unit was the thinner single plug unit that is at the rear on both the 3.0 and 964?

Paul, the pressure sender has 2 terminals. I tried to replace mine but the correct sender would not fit.

The temp sender is #38, the pressure is #40 there was a different older 964 setup(prior to '93). Pictured is for late 964 and 993

I'm a bit confused on the pressure sender. I have the original '91 in my 3.6L, engine still out of the car. I also have a '78 pressure sender on the shelf. My guage has numbers but there the real small ones on the left that you need a magnifying glass to read. There are two box type sections on the guage, lower box is blank and upper is filled in red. '78 pressure sender has one wire the '91 has two. Should I install the '78?

Thanks Bill. Mine is a 93 so the diagram is correct for my purposes. I was able to use a 78SC temp sending unit (no. 38 in the above diagram) to match my guage. I guess I will have to get used to the overstated druck pressure unless Ingo can find a way to hook up a resister?

Moses, how is your druck pressure reading on your new motor?

Rob, are you talking about the temp sending unit or the pressure sending unit? Only the temp guage would have the small number to the left of the guage. If you are talking about the temp sending unit, go with the 78. Mine is working fine.

Druck runs high just like it did in the 3.0. Temp seems to run MUCH lower. Wonder if the reading is off or if it is the two new oil coolers?
