Bought my first 911 - a dream realized

Just wanted to give an introduction. I posted a couple threads in here asking for advice and this and rennlist have been so helpful.

I've been lurking in these forums for a really long time, but as I got closer to buy I created an account, attempted to contribute where I could, and posted more and more.

Background of this car:

20 years ago when I was in first grade my father bought me a book at one of those scholastic book fairs. It actually had a 993 on the cover and ever since then I've lusted after an air-cooled 911. I used to draw 964s and read about all the specs and histories of these cars. In college I would often find myself in class looking through build threads and sometimes even classifieds daydreaming about the day I would get to own one myself.

The idea of owning a 911 was like some uncontrollable weed that kept growing in my mind. As I got further into my career I would start saving some here and there to finally get one.

After tons of research I knew I wanted a G-body car. I had an s2000 before and have always said that car ruined other cars for me. I've always wanted a "raw" driving experience so I ditched the idea of a 964/993 and wanted a 911 with no power steering or driver aides.

Recently an '89 popped up I jumped at the chance. My GF and I booked a one way from Dallas to Peoria, IL and drove ~800 miles home. The car never missed a beat and drove perfectly home.

I've said in the "911 ownership experience thread" that I view this car as a lifelong project, not an investment. It is literally my dream car so I've already mentally prepared myself for the eventual engine rebuild when that day comes. I'm not a mechanic by any means, in fact the complete opposite as I work in tech, but with Youtube guides, this forum, and other books I think I'll be okay for the most part.

I've already expressed interest in attending the Engine Rebuilt class held by Tony and would love to just learn more and more on how I can work on this car myself.

Anyway, I'm happy to be a part of this awesome community and can't wait for the adventures in this car.

First very quick impressions

• I wish someone told me about the "trick" of putting the gas nozzle upside down when filling up. I felt like an idiot at every gas station
• I test drove 915s and G50s and honestly I couldn't tell the difference. The 915s I drove must have been well sorted. For future buyers I think the G50 is a plus, but definitely don't count out the 915. This one just happened to have popped up and I was 100% ok with buying a 915 car
• Every stop on the way home someone would stop me and talk about my car. I've never experienced this before.

Based on your flight info it sounds like you may be in the DFW ares. If you are there's a Porsche cars and coffee (Mav's & Mochas on facebook) this Saturday (2nd Sat. of each month). This month is at Starbucks (100 Highland Park Shopping Ctr, Dallas, TX). If you're available you should bring out the new baby and show it off.

I too had a one way ticket to Peoria, IL last July to buy my first 911. The drive back to MD was one of the greatest experiences. Just you, your new bliss, and the road.

Yes, when I kept filling it up "normally" it would just stop filling up. When I watched this video everything made sense - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqgoWuP57U0

Did you know Sean? I actually did not know much history of the car but I had a PPI done at Kauth and Mayeur in Peoria and it was enough for me to get the green light. The owner of that shop is a reputable Porsche driver so I trusted his wisdom.

It's definitely not a garage queen, though. It has 93K miles on the clock, but it was well taken care of.

I recently bought my first 911 as well. I haven't made a thread yet. I suspect I will as I have lots of plans for the car, which implies lots of questions as well! Filling it up the first time on the way home, the gas filler kept shutting off. I fumbled with it enough to get it filled, but I'll try this trick next time.

Congrats - looks beautiful. I know not my biz, but dare I say I'm not a fan of the lug nuts. I did Tony's engine re-build class - def worth it.

It's funny, I didn't know that fuel filler trick either, and I've owned my SC for over a year. I always just insert the neck of the fuel nozzle about halfway in and then I have to manually squeeze the trigger. Otherwise the nozzle shuts off repeatedly. I'll give this a shot and see if it improves my fuel filling experience!

Congratulations. Nice car and good attitude! I had and still have the same excited feeling as you about my 911 all these years later. I remember as a kid when I got a new BMX bike and I would get up early and rush to the garage. Here I am almost 50 with the same feeling every weekend
