I like this build and watch a few of your youtube episodes. We chatted once at luft. I appreciate your intention to go your own way and learn as you go.

IMO you're going to regret the backwards flare thing. It's interesting and catches the eye now because it's different, but I think you'll find it in the uncanny valley after a while. That's when something looks off because it's close but not quite right and your brain rejects it. The 911 shape is burnt into your brain, you can probably sketch it with your eyes closed. Subtly different shapes will just look kit-car funky when you get it all glossy. Especially when you park it next to your grey one.

It's your build, but to me the blasphemy part is the new drivetrain and modern tech. Taking the air-cooled out of longhood S chassis is the ultimate in purist hell. Shaving gutters and putting bigger arches on takes the porsche lines and makes them better and isn't the blasphemous part. Especially because you're going with the RSR style and plates. My 2 cents.

It's possible. I'm not 100% committed to the flares yet. I have to see them with bumpers on and in their right position. I'm definitely not doing "RSR" on the plate or otherwise. I just happened to have that one lying around. :) I think once I strip the flares to bare metal and get them screwed in I'll have a better idea if I really want to do it. Thanks for the feedback.

It seems like the surrounding sheet metal must be paper thin by now.

rennch 10-23-2020 02:43 PM

I’ve tried to keep it as intact as possible, but it’s hard. I’ll be looking forward to beefing it back up with lead filler.

I have been keeping light touch with this thread and noticed your plan to use a rear fender on the fronts. Not something I would do but if you do proceed with this then have you checked to make sure the front edge of a door won't interfere with the fender when it's opened?

There is what appears to be a chalk line on the fender where the door seam is, so I reckon Mike is working on a plan to work around that interference.

What I think is a larger problem is the radius of the rear arch. Specifically, look at the relationship of the wheel to arch from 10:00 to 2:00. The rear arch is not symmetrical and would, in this instance, slope down towards the front. I feel that will be much more difficult to pull off than trimming and blending the arch at the base of the A-pillar.

I'm interested to see how this plays out.

Flojo 10-26-2020 06:23 AM

it looks right and wrong same time.

what is the purpose of this anyway?
are front arches nla or what?

ryanjboutin 10-26-2020 04:04 PM

It's the Diablo rear arches in the front look.

75 911s 10-27-2020 03:27 AM

To be fair, ever look at "correct" IROC front flares? Not symmetrical at all.

REALLY fun video today. I got to work with the cutest little old man on machining my adapter plate, Chris from Outfront Motorsports came by to help me strip my engine of all the unnecessary bits, and Dave Bouzaglou from TRE Motorsports came by to help me work on flares and getting my pedal assemblies to fit.

REWIRING THE CAR: I’m saying “Re-wiring” but I should just say “wiring”.

The car was a gutted racecar, so there aren’t any wires to begin with. I just did a little unboxing video for my YouTube channel, and took a few stills for you guys. The kit is very nicely organized and thought out, and appears to be very user-friendly, even for a wiring newbie like me. American Autowire has a kit for the Volkswagen bug, but nothing for an early 911, unfortunately. This kit was $519 from Summit.

Obviously, if you are doing a stock, or period correct install, then I highly recommend the replacement harnesses from Restoration Design, which are first rate.

Here's a timelapse of the progress I've made on this 1969 Porsche 911s race car that I'm converting back into a street car. I had to completely rebuild the back end, both quarter panels, and the front end, as well as a blasphemous power plant choice!

It's been really fun so far.

My rear suspension control arm pickup points had to be refinished, since the original had been cut off. I had a 3” square tube to modify.

How do you plan to keep your alignment settings without anything to hold the bolt in the slot ?

I am surprised you are not getting much feedback on here Michael, but I think you are doing an amazing job on the build, experimenting, learning and figuring things out as you go.

Glad to see that your Youtube channel is really picking up, too! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/clap.gif

Thanks Lukas! Yeah, it seems I can’t get any traction with this build thread, so I have mostly given up on it. The channel is finally starting to experience some good growth though!

So...I did my first captive nut thing just now. Before I weld in the bottom of my rear seat section, I needed captive nuts so I could mount the battery. So, I made this bracket, drilled the holes, then welded on this captive nut set up. It looks awesome!

Looks great, you better show us some details in a video!

I ended up buying a Rivnut Kit because it seemed that Jeff from Home Built used them all of the time... of course I have yet to have the opportunity to use them.

SO much cool fabrication on this one. I have (had?) a giant hole where a rear seat would have been, so I've had to custom fabricate all of the sections to accommodate my Porsche 996 (G96) transmission into this 1969 body, plus make a spot for an Odyssey 925 battery and my Haltech ECU. I had 30+ hours of work in this video! Hope you enjoy.

From a structural support perspective, if you are trying to limit "oil canning" or flexing of a flat surface like a drum, you might want to consider using a reinforcing element that has a vertical rib, something along the lines of angle iron. Using flat bar/strap material may not provide the structural support that I think you are hoping for.

well, you're probably right! I thought about that, and I think if I were leaving it raw steel, I'd probably go that route. But after undercoating on the underside, some sort of dynamat on the topside, I think it will be ok. Thanks for the suggestion.
