[BUILD THREAD] The 69 911s Blasphemy Build - LASTERN

Hi all. After a scant 15 years, I'm back with another build thread. I've had this idea for the last couple of years, and I was waiting until the right car came along to build it. That car became available, and I picked it up this week:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1565547035.jpg

Note: This WHOLE build, all the decisions and fabrication, installation, etc is on my YouTube channel, and the first video is posted: http://rennch.com/youtube

THE STORY

This is a 1969 911s(!) that was heavily modified and engineered for GT2 Racing in 1994...you know, when people could buy these for 5 grand. The owner and his father were building the car...and his dad was a real engineering genius. You'll see from the close up pictures how well done it was.

The chassis was essentially gutted, and an AIR Le Mans 993 GT2 widebody kit (Currently for sale if you want to build your own RWB) was impeccably installed.

I knew I wanted to do a blasphemy build...but there was no way I was going to split up a matching numbers 911 or 912 to do it.

I'd resigned myself that I'd have to find a rusty heap and spend the next two years fixing it, before I got to the fun stuff.

I was looking for a chassis...I didn't care about engine or trans, I didn't need the gauges, wiring, wheels, or any of the interior. My budget was 10k for the shell.

When this came along, I thought it was fake, or a scam. Not a bit of rust, a bunch of trick bits (More on that later), and it was 10k.

Needless to say, after jumping in my car and checking it out in LA, it was a no brainer. Here are a few pics of the car, then I'll show you guys some of the engineering.

Engineering Marvel

This thing was really well built for GT2 Racing. I was excited because I was already planning on doing a rollcage and coilovers, so those tough jobs were already done. In addition, we've got adjustable camber front and rear, lots of trick suspension bits, pass through rear deck, and a bonkers dual coil cooler system in the front:

So, what's the plan?

I do a LOT of targa events. 1500 mile road rallies. And rennch is going to be putting on a few rallies as well. So, I want a car that's long road trip comfortable. It will have modern amenities, but hopefully be executed in a period-correct way.

It will NOT have a Porsche engine. It will have a Porsche trans...in fact, a G96 from a 996. Six-Speed, Cable Actuated. I picked that up yesterday. It will have 400+ Hp.

It will have modern architecture and engine managment. It will hopefully run flex-fuel on E85. It will have lots of trick bits. It will piss off some purists.

Part of what I want to do with it is "proof of concept". Prices have gotten so outrageous for these cars that I'd like to be able to show people that you dont need to mortgage your house for modern speed and power.

Modern architecture and engine management, 400+ HP...

I'm sure someone makes the components to bolt an LS based engine to your G96.

Or, Voodoo platform?

I'm not sure what the most blasphemous would be in an early 911...

silverc4s 08-12-2019 07:24 AM

How about an AMG M113K motor converted to twin turbo? Easy to find these motors for not a lot of money...

So, I'm guessing Suby turbo power?

You know, a twin turbo air cooled flat six would really make this thing special. But then where would the blasphemy be in that?

And what are your plans for the body? You don't like the 993 look?:D

Cory M 08-13-2019 08:07 AM

Looks like a solid chassis to start with, lots of interesting fab work. I'm guessing turbo Suby as well. Makes sense to me, since you are starting with a heavily modified chassis already and these engines are just so damn expensive. When my old Subaru WRX had engine problems a new short block was $1500 from Subaru.

I've just uploaded video 2 of the Porsche Blasphemy Build series to the rennch YouTube channel. Would love a sub if you're so inclined.

In this vid, I size up the Porsche G96 Transmission (Six speed, cable shift) to my 69 911s (former) race car.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7EZEXq2MTo

One of the main issues is the mounting type of the 915 is completely different than that of the G96. My thought is to buy a standard 915 cradle, and weld some "ears" on so I can mount the G96.

I'm in the process of waiting for body panels from Restoration Design...which reminds me,

Restoration Design, Haltech, and Eastwood have come on board as sponsors of the build! Really psyched to be working with a bunch of cool companies. Stay tuned.

Here’s the mounting situation. Question for you guys… I need to get axles that are about 18 1/2 inches long. Is there some sort of chart that lists the lengths of different Porsche axles? I’m assuming the spline is pretty similar for the last 15 years or so.

I've just uploaded video 3 of my Twin Turbo Vintage Porsche "Blasphemy Build". (If you're subscribed, you know that by now. If you're not, Would love a sub and a thumbs up if you like it!

In this episode, I deconstruct the really cool racing oil cooler system (soon to be replaced by radiators), finish up shaving the brackets from the GT2 RSR bodykit, show you a cool garage hack I'm doing, demonstrate my spreadsheet to keep track of this whole build, and reveal the CONCEPT DRAWINGS of the finished product. (And they are incredible!!)

Still waiting on panels:

I reached out on Instagram....

...to see if someone could help me concept my ideas for this build. This guy reached out and was like "Yea, I can sketch something for you....".

This is a SAMPLING of the 4 renderings he sent me. They are effing UNBELIEVABLE.
Check out the video for the other 3:

It’s Christmas!!

A knock on my door, and my body panels from Restoration Design have shown up!

I was expecting just the front fenders to be in, but it looks like the rear quarters are there as well. I will be doing an unboxing video on YouTube as I process them and fit them to the car. Finally though, I can make some major progress on the car.

I too enjoy stepping outside the typical purist directions. My 72T isn't much outside except maybe the Cobra rear view mirrors but talking about engines check this out.

Unboxing BRAND NEW Restoration Design Quarter Panels and Fenders!

Well, this was a thrill. Restoration Design decided to sponsor my blasphemy build, and after six long weeks of waiting, sent out quarter panels and fenders to bolt onto the car. (Or weld, as the case may be)

I filmed an entire video about the Unboxing process on my YouTube channel if you want to check it out:

https://youtu.be/-uLQ4uZf0jA

After 16 years of restoring these cars, I’ve actually never had brand new fenders or quarter panels to work with. What a delight to not have to clean them and cut rust out, LOL.

Yea man, it's gonna be awesome. I have a lot more skill than I did when I built the Grey Ghost!

That *was* my BMX/freestyle ramp, but I gave it to some college kids to make some space for this buld.

My 2nd bumper patch. Pigeon poop welds, but we got there eventually. Once I bodywork it a little bit, and finish the lip, it should be pretty good.

Part 4 of my 1969 Porsche 911s Blasphemy Build is up on YouTube! I had to extensively modify this former race car to properly fit the brand new Restoration Design front fenders, and the original Porsche 911S bumper, which I also refurbished during the episode. Finally, I had to modify the rear deck lid area so I was able to properly fit the deck lid. It’s up on http://rennch.com/YouTube now!

[BUILD THREAD] The 69 911s Blasphemy Build - LASTERN

Been a bit since I’ve updated. I’ve been traveling a ton, and it’s been raining here as well, so I haven’t had much of a chance to work on the car. However, today I made a decision and trimmed the replacement quarter panels for a rough fitment:

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...00cad81117.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a5f211a9a7.jpg

It was a bit chaotic trimming off OEM Porsche, as well as replacement parts for fitment:

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e5d434336a.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d1abaad870.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...9d8c22ed82.jpg

I am mostly pleased about how it’s turning out, however, it looks like my wheelbase has been lengthened a little bit:

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f6e2569742.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a36cc22143.jpg

Obviously, the suspension has been highly modified to become a GT two race car. Wondering if perhaps these are the wrong rear control arms and they are a bit longer than standard turbo arms. Can anyone comment to that?

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e5b50a4e6b.jpg

rennch 12-05-2019 06:50 PM

For clarity… I measured my current RSR a wheel base around 89”. This car is measuring 90”.
