Sometimes a smart-a$$ remark is not the best way!

Kurt, Paul Wier was (still is?) a Porsche mechanic. He had a shop in the seattle area a couple of years ago that he lost due to bankruptcy. He seems to post some pretty cool stuff for sale on e-bay as well. That's all I really know about him.

He ha$ ton$ of cool $tuff but at $trato$pheric price$.

I got a kick out of the guibo installation tool. Cool idea, but $1250? I could knock that up in less than an hour in my garage (looks like he did, too)

He was a guy here in Seattle that had a repair shop and advertised engine re-builds in many Porsche publications. One day his parts department closed then all of a sudden the entire shop closed due to bankruptcy. Didn't have any work done by him...Don't know much about his reputation...

One of the guys on this board, (Britwrench?), used to work for him. He, (Paul Weir), was building a 935 starting w/ a 930, not sure if it was ever finished, but he had crazy parts $$ invested in it.

If you do a search under "Paul Weir", there were some long threads back when he was going out of business.

With all due respect Two, why would a guy on the East coast know of Paul? I've never heard of him, so am I an idiot? I don't think so. If he went bankrupt, he obviously wasn't the best business person. Anyhow, sounds like he was interesting.

regards,

My shop guy use to work for him, And my 930 rebuild was done by his shop, He spent more money on his cars and didn't pay the help, And Over charged on alot of his work the PO of my 930 Paid 10k to rebuild the motor and he didn't split the case, on the bill I read that he charged the guy $400 for a set of rings that you can get anywhere for $110 The stuff that he is selling might be parts that he hid frome the bank, I would stay clear of buying or having any work done by him

Well he loves Porsches and his shop sure liked to race them. The common hit on Paul and Co. was that they liked to race and working on customer cars was something they simply had to do to get the money for racing.

My car was serviced to some degree by Weir's shop prior to my going to Denny Akers and of course our own John Walker (both EXCELLENT wrenches). The PO was told that the #1 cylinder was out, and that a rebuild of the 3.0 was required. Techron runs and regular use have brought that cylinder back to spec., though to be fair it is not all it could be and I suspect blowby.

But one thing sticks with me: I have the records for the PO's request to replace both rear license plate lights (yeah, I know...). After I bought the car I noticed all four screws had not been put back into these license plate holders.

I took a tour of their engine rebuilding facility. The reason folks might know, on a nationwide basis, about PWeir is that he advertised in Pano and Excellence all the time for engine rebuilds. Anyway, the facility had real promise. It really could have flown if it had been run tight and lean and satisfaction had been job one. Could have shown that the Motormeister model could work after all. I was sorry to see them go, though there is no question that I'd have (and will continue to have) John Walker's Workshop perform the service on my SC.

John

Just an FYI, I also used to work for Paul Weir (`94-`96), and wasn't aware of ANY racing taking place. Oh, and that 930-to-935 project was cool, but definitely a huge money pit. He had probably $200K+ into that car, and never got it on the road (or track). I believe he ended up selling in to Kevin Buckler (The Racer's Group) for around $40k (ouch!) as the bank was closing in.

I wonder if that's this car:

I defer to Eric's post - this was something I heard outside P's shop from a tech. looking at my SC. Not sure why'd he say that to me - maybe bad blood?

Water under the bridge now anyway...
