Decided to finally fix the leaks that made such a mess of the engine, and which also made the valve adjustment job pretty unpleasant - everything was coated in a dirty oil residue.

At one of my first jobs, the old guy who owned the place could whip out a 911 engine in less than a half an hour. I swear he'd pull it out for anything more than an oil change (slightly exaggerating, but not by much). After awhile, I felt the same way, too. Valve adjustment AND an oil leak from something on top? It's coming out!

Fixed it with a 3.6L:D

yep. at first glance one wonders how it can support these 200+ kg of weight, uh...

Rotted pallet? nah that is just nicely weathered....

but do wonder why you used it?

I am also moving toward the 'pull the engine' for anything more involved than oil change. same with my 944s for anything involving getting to the bell housing.

Same here. In 2003, pulled the lower valve covers for a routine valve adjustment and it started raining headstuds. :eek: Engine drop #1.

Seven engine drops later, I have the tools and checklists to take the stress out of the process. Still takes almost two hours to get it out and on the stand, but can do it alone and know I'm not damaging anything.

Think you could share the list of tools and checklists? I’m always on the lookout for those who have created such guides - I’ve not pulled an engine yet, but my oil consumption figures indicate I’ll have to do so...

What lift do you have? I'm considering getting a 4 post and the engine obviously fits between the rails of your.

After the last one i did , i decided to install a 95 3.6, no more valve adjustments ... wooooohooo !

The lift lowers enough for the jack ?

Just tallying up the $$ for everything I want to do while it's out, which could take a while lol. Oh, and waiting to receive my valve adjustment tool.

Good eye pmax, that's indeed an inverted jackstand to back up the jack.

Rotted pallet was outside for over 9 years, it was what my 4-post lift was delivered on so it's appropriate ;)

No broken studs, the stud gods are smiling on me (for now anyway).

Just needed the extra height for the jack not to be maxed out before lifting the car, and didn't have the necessary wood (2x4, 4x4 etc) lying around.
