I Can Hear The Valve Slapping On Its Seat

In my endeavor in replacing most of the bottom valve stem seals, I ran into cylinder #5 exhaust valve having a bit of play, which all others did not. Once in a while, I would hear a "ticking" sound when the car was on, but did not know what it was, though it sounded to be in the passenger side bank.

The sound comes and goes.

Question is, is it worthy to continued driving it, or shall I bite the bullet and have the valve guide replaced.

I have the same thing only #2 cylinder. It’s been that way for a few years now. Just did a cylinder leak down test and it was holding at 4%. Oil consumption is about 700 miles/quart and it doesn’t smoke unless I hard engine brake. I’ve been collecting parts for a few years to do the top end and take it out to a 3.2SS. I know it’s coming, but I continue to drive it because it runs so damn well!

2.7s with their original copper guides did the tick/no tick thing when the guides wore out enough to have about 1/2" slop at the valve head.

To me, that sounds like a lot of slop.

Thanx for everyone's responses. I will do a leak-down to further investigate, BTW this is 86.

I did a leak-down maybe 4 years ago and all the numbers were approximately 2-3%. I do not track the track and drive it as much as possible.

You sound like a pretty handy man. It's time for a valve job.

that's the way my 77 was. took me a bit to realize after doing valve adjustments the ticking I was hearing was bad guides.
