Starting to get frustrated
So...i was doing a DE this past weekend at Roebling road in Savannah and all was going well, well until about 4 or 5 laps in. Coming down the straight into the braking zone try to downshift into 4th and nothing. It was like all the gears just disappeared. I was able to finally get it to shift into 3rd and run another 4 or 5 laps and then nothing, no gears.
So what gives.. Car is an 86 coupe Jwest shifter, relatively new trans and motor mounts, and a wevo shift coupler. Trans rebuild a few years ago with about 6000 miles on it. I'm thinking maybe the shift fork may be loose on the side cover of the trans, but doesn't make sense the the gears come and go. Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.. TIA Steve |

I was going to suggest looking at the coupler. But what you have is way ahead of any knowledge I have.
Good luck, I hope it's something simple/external. |

Did the problem resolve itself or do you still have no gears? I experienced something similar years ago at a DE. Five laps or so into a session and I wouldn't be able to find any gears (or would essentially be stuck in 3rd). I pitted and parked it wondering how I was going to get home. Once the car sat for a bit, the transmission shifted fine. I thought maybe it was a clutch cable adjustment, so I messed with that, but the next session out, the same thing happened.
In the end, I was low on gear oil. Evidently the transmission would heat up and something was binding internally. Once it cooled down it was fine. Just a thought...

If it goes away when hot but comes back when it cools it definitely sounds like a fluid problem.

I hadn't thought about being low on fluid...good suggestion...that will be the first thing i check..
The clutch cable was adjusted a few months ago but I'll recheck that as well.. The problem resolves itself, but i have to coast to about turn 3 before i get any gears back...then i can run another 4 laps or so before the gears disappear...rinse and repeat.. |

And then it was OK driving home?
Maybe not a fluid level issue as much as a temperature problem. Euro cars had trans coolers for a reason. Also I can't really see how hot temps would cause you to lose gears. Are you running Swepco? Seems to be the standard around here.

Yes i run swepco...
Im sure the gear oil temp gets pretty hot, but doesn't make sence that the temps would come down enough between turn 1 n 3 to make a world of difference... Just strange that after it fixes itself that i can run another 4 or 5 laps before it happens again.. It's almost like it's set on a timer...Hahaha.. |
