Torsion bar reinstall warning
Ok warning may be overstated. As a 911 may oversteer. I was reinstalling the rear 29 mm torsion bars today and as I was applying pressure to ensure full engagement of the interior splines suddenly the bar left my grease contaminated hands and launched into the tube. The feeling when this happens is like ok I’m fuched but I somehow recovered to disassemble the opposite side and locate the bar conveniently and FML close enough to the opposite side I could get some purchase and extract. Yup. The bar is not coming out since the diameter of the splined end that fits in the ER polybronze bearing is larger than the interior. Located a wooden dowel and pushed it back. So no big deal if torsion bar gets lost in torsion tune. I mean it is but one can recover it. So torsion bar reinsallers been warned.

I wonder if tying a string tightly around the end of it would help just in case. If it was dropped inside you could lift it out.

I did this at one point, too, fearing I would lose the bar when pushing it back. String got caught in torsion tube splines so had to remove string - pushing with a wooden dowel (no strings attached) was luckily how to retrieve the torsion bar.

installing the other bar will push it back out too.

I have a couple of years' worth of foam ear plugs lodged in the back of my throat from the same basic problem.

Completed the re-install of the rear TBs (Sway Away Solid 29). The main deal was the ER Polybronze bearings and adjustable Spring plates. Sure it’s no big deal. Remove the old hardened and zero compliant “rubber”. And Install ER polybronze. So I went ahead and believed possible. I was more than pleasantly shocked when I plugged some numbers into Elephant Racing Spring angle calculator (as close as memory recalls etc of 2200 lbs (could be lower but not more) and the expected angle of 22.63 degrees was within 1 degree of the install (L and R). Is that close enough? Any comments on the photos welcome - have not done this before... I have yet to torque to spec. Second torque wrench purchased and she sez whatz this? Love the rug. Gotta get me one of those; only the best for my 911! 👍

I like the rug, too. When I drop nuts or bolts that don't hit my eye or teeth they don't bounce as far. Any other install feedback? Car is still on jack stands as I wait for longer exhaust/header bolts from BelMetric (recommended on the EC to Philly anyway - delivery is pronto - I fear/hope my last order went in today to complete a header install). Here's a photo of the L spring plate angle, R was 0.1 degree different) back just before I started disassembly..local shop matched L/R as close as possible. Funny, it was only after I finished did I read a thread that pointed to the ER calculator. So do better searches is my bottom line.
Could this be more fun? ![]()
