DIY steering wheel recovering?

At one time Alan Gunn was the source for DIY steering wheel recovering kits. I understand they are not around anymore. Any recommendations for another supplier? This would be for an aftermarket steering wheel, so presumably kits might be generic.

On a related point, am I nuts to attempt this?

I looked into it. I ended up sending it to Dallas Steering wheel. They did a perfect color match and a perfect quality product. I was very happy with the price and delivery time. After many years and many miles, it still looks great.

Yes! I did it once and it was certainly doable, but what a time consuming finicky job. This last time I used Dallas and it was perfect. We have to decide when it is just better to pay someone.

I've used Dallas 5 times. I won't go anywhere else.

Certainly doable. Cut old covering off and make a template. Shrink that template 8% if using top grain leather. Punch holes neatly for stitching. First time you do it takes around 8 hours doing it with wheel in lap. Subsequent times you'll figure out mounting wheel on something that allows it to rotate on a vertical axis is much better than lap... 5 hours. To do in one piece of leather takes half a hide with a good bit of waste left over.
