Rear turn signals and running lights reversed
I recently acquired an 81 911 SC. The current issue is the rear turn signals and running lights are reversed so I have bright running lights and dim rear turn signals. The front turn signals and running lights are fine. Before I got the car the PO had the turn signal switch replaced. I pulled down the headlight switch and made sure all the wire color codes were matched. I also removed the tail lights to see if someone had done any modifications and doublechecked the bulbs, all was stock. The reverse lights don't work either but, I haven't begun to troubleshoot that issue.
Rewiring the taillight housing is not the direction I'd like to go. Any insight would be appreciated. Doug |

Turns signals and running lights are separate bulbs, not connected together in anyway. The running lights (tail lights) are combined with the brake lights. I'd like to see a picture that shows which bulb is dim, which is brights, and which one flashes. Also, is this problem on both sides of the car, or just one?

It's just the dual filament wiring that appears backward. If the running lights are on, the near-center turn signals are lost.
Both sides are affected. One is the running lights on (the picture shows them as yellow but, they're really red)... The video with the emergency flashers on, individual turn signals intensity is the same... Link to photo and video. https://photos.app.goo.gl/hv94Hmt8PC71r4dC8 |

Either the wiring inside the housings is mixed up or maybe someone managed to get a double filament bulb in 180 out.

I always thought the running lights on the side don’t flash.
Either the wires in the housings are really messed up, or the wires at the front fuse panel are swapped. Easy to see and check up front, a lot of work to get in the housings. Grey/red & Grey/black running light wires swapped with black/white black/green signal wires somewhere. On the fuse panel the grey wires are in the first few terminals near the headlight. (3&4) The blacks are further back (9&10)

I decided to look into the taillight assembly since everything else appeared to be correct. The car had been painted years ago and in the process, someone disassembled the taillights.
Thanks for all your input. ![]() |

Just an FYI:
Black/yellow is brake. Grey/red is running lights. Black/white is turn signal.

Everything is back together and working properly. On a side note, the side markers no longer flash, they just glow with the running lights.
