Flexible oil line conversion on case-help please (Thom, Superman, others?)

I'm considering installing some SSIs that I have sitting on a shelf onto my '88 Carrera, and am figuring out the case-to-thermostat oil line. I would like to go to a flexible line (routed over the transmission) rather than the backdated hard line because it makes it easy to change back to stock once in a while as needed....

I've been looking at www.batinc.com but still need a little advice. Can you help me with exactly what fittings I need?

-On the case: it appears I need to convert the 30mmx1.5 on the case to AN-16 with a 90-degree bend? Does this require one fitting or two?

-On the thermostat, it looks like I just need a 30mmx1.5 to AN-16?

-Most importantly, How long a -16 hose do I need, to route over the transmission?

IMHO the easiest way to do this is with the factory lines. Swapping out the SSI is much more work than changing one oil line, so it isn't that big a deal.

If you do go flex line, why not just use 30mm hose ends and skip the AN stuff? The catch might be finding a 30mm 90' bend for the case side.

For the length, the smart money will mock this up using old garden hose and the actual hose ends. You can find the exact length before cutting the expensive braided hose.

Thanks Chuck, I can see your point. But the lazy (and cheap) side of me me would rather spend a bit more upfront for the flexible line, and not have to drain the oil to switch systems over once, then drain it again to switch systems back the next day.

This is a good idea I hadn't considered. Do you sell the 30mm hose ends, or know where I can get them? Does Elephant make up flexible hoses? I scoured the hydraulic shops in my area yesterday and they do not have metric fittings this big.

A local Pelicanhead told me that JW had a flexible oil line that had come with his heat exchangers, but that he did not like and swapped for the hard pre-75 line. He said I could have it if John still had it. I saw this thing on John's floor and asked if it might work for my backdating. John handed it to me and suggested I see. Yes, it works. Braided hose with the proper ends (including the 90 degree). Goes up and over the tranny. It's not in the way of anything, so I'll never have to mess with it again, unless it fails. Don't know who makes it, but it seemed to me that it might have come with a kit. JW would probably know where to get them.

I have this oil line, which I got with my B&B headers but didn't use. It goes all the way from the case to the thermostat. I'm told these are sold for doing exhause conversions. Make offer - I had new hose put on it back in October, it's been sitting in a box ever since:

I imagine you could contact B&B to see who is their supplier for the hose ends?

They're not all that receptive sometimes, so I imagine Chuck could source the 90 fitting for you as well (since he offers the other metric fittings???).

The line I have for the B&B headers is not as long as Super describes, so it must run under the motor case and up past the heat exchanger tubes.

I cut some coolant hose to fit around the flexline so as to have something for the zip strips to grab onto. Looks kinda like a rig job to me and that's one of the things I don't like about the B&B headers. If I could use the backdated/SSI oil lines for the B&B headers I would be much happier. Anybody know if this is possible?

Yes. That is exactly what I did on my 3.6 in my SC.

Would you happen to have a picture Paul? Just curious to see how the lines run around the B&B heater boxes, tubes and into the front oil cooler thermostat.

Yeah Chuck. I got a little out of control with the cleaning. That citrus orange stuff and Simple Green do such a good job, I just couldn't resist. The motor picture is a little misleading. The flash makes everything look shiny. It's really not. Jet Hot does look pretty cool though...........

The whole job (suspension, brakes, exhaust) was a one time thing to get everything refreshed and be done with it.
