Rebuilding your own starter?

Has anyone tried rebuilding your own starter? I have a CLYMER Repair Service Book and it expleins how to go about this. Is this really worth it? Are the brushes and other parts available out there? Looking at the book it seems pretty simple, not a $240+ job.

Yes, several times. Bushings, and brushes are readily available.

Be sure to use a high-quality, high-temperature moly grease such as Valvoline #986 SynPower Synthetic Grease with Moly on the bendix mechanism, solenoid plunger and linkage! Clean everything thoroughly with Brakleen or a similar solvent before lubing and reassembling.

Rebuilt Starters

I had the starter on my '87 Landcruiser rebuilt at an electronics repair shop that specialized in rebuilding starters and alternators for around $50.

Check the yellow pages, for that price I couldn't afford to goof around with it.

Would look into the same if the starter on my car went bad.

Is it possible to just replace the toothed gear at the end of the starter? My starter is relatively new but the teeth are a little more worn than I'd like due to the fact that the starter ring was getting worn, resulting in the occasion poor connection and slightly chewed up starter gear. I'd prefer to not completely replace the starter on top of the cost for the current rebuild I'm doing.
TIA

I would recommend you find out what shops that work on starters would charge you. I have a Hi-Torque starter and it was $65 to rebuild w/a 1yr warranty 11months later I took it back and they fixed/replaced the solenoid.

same day service, if they have the starter before 9am I can have it back by 2pm
fix.
It would probable take me longer, and I don't always have the extra time.
