Shifter base _on top of_ carpet? (82 SC)

Hi there. I am replacing my beat up carpeting with an appbiz kit, the plush variety. I deleted my center console and have a rennshift shifter. I am trying to figure out the best way to manage the carpet around the shifter. I have seen some pictures on these forums where it looks like the shifter base is bolted on top of the carpet, perhaps with the shifter base bolts going through holes in the carpet. My first instinct was to try to cut a perfectly circular hole around the round part of the shifter base, and have the carpet on top, but I really like the look of the entire base. Does pinching the carpet like that under the base seem like a dumb idea? I suppose torque is torque and as long as it's down tight enough there's no danger of the base wobbling or anything. But it still seems a little off. Any tips? Thanks is advance!!!

I don’t think it matters either way. My Wevo is currently bolted down without carpet in between, but it’s mainly because my carpet is hella old and will be replaced this year. When I replace the carpet, the Wevo will be bolted down on top of the carpet. That’s the way plenty of folks do it and I’ve never heard of an issue.

Have the carpet bound around the shifter.

On 901/915 gearboxes, the ball end of the lever fits into a nylon ball socket (see below, part #45) and receptacle (#46) attached to the shift tube (#47) which is in turn fixed/suspended X mm/inches below the tunnel by the shift tube support bracket (#43). The shift housing is usually mounted directly onto the metal floor/tunnel.

Regardless, there is some vertical leeway for the ball socket to move within the receptacle.

I don't think it matters much if thin carpeting is added between the shift housing and the floor. However, if shifting feels unnecessarily stiff, confirm the shift rod is free to move fore and aft without binding the shift rod support bushing (#44).

Super helpful thank you. The bracket also mounts on top of the tunnel, not below, yes?

for a firm fit, bolt shifterbase directly to tunnel, lay carpet around it

as I use no boot for my WEVO-pimped shifter, Simon from @pf911interiors in UK made this according to my wish

The thickness of the carpet also matters. If you're using a super thick/plush style, I could see it making a slight difference. But if you're using thinner RS-style carpet, I can't imagine that having any negative effects.

i redid with thinner carpet and mounted on top since it was a redone shifter and polished up nice. (also siene shift gate). Looks great since I removed center console and this completes the "look"

I like the shifter to feel like it's bolted to the center of the earth, so I fitted the carpet around mine.

That nicely-edged circular cut does look nice...
