do phone dial wheels fit a narrow body 911.

They were used as the standard wheel on the 911 for a few years, after the ATS 'cookie cutter'. So, at least some were made with a 911 compatible offsets. And, although they look heavy, they are only about 2 lbs heavier than a comparable size Fuchs.

I am using a set of the early offset (23mm) 7 x 15 phone dials on my '73 911RS clone with Goodyear 23x9x15 slicks and they work great. They have more caliper overhang clearance than the Fuchs or ATS cookie cutters, which helps if you have Turbo brakes installed.

The later phone dials had a 52mm offset and won't work. Just look for the ET number on the back of the wheel.

By narrow body do you mean non-turbo or non-SC/Carrera flares?

If you want 16 in. wheels you can also use the phone dials from the 86 944 Turbo. They are 16x7 and 16x8 with 23.3 mm offsets just like the 911 16x7 Fuchs wheel that has a 23.3 mm offset. I think the 16's look better than the 15's.

The correct part numbers for the 23.3 mm offset 944 Turbo phone dials are:

16x7 = 951.362.114.00
16x8 = 951.362.116.00

BTW, you DO NOT want the 87 and later offset 944 Turbo phone dials. They have 52.3 mm offsets and will not work properly with the 911. You would need spacers for these and that would be silly.

Stupid question but how do I measure a 23mm off set when inspecting the wheels I am looking at ?

For the narrowest of narrow, you want no bigger than a 16x7 with 205 tires on it at the rear. Not sure about the front.

For the offset, you must be sure of the rim width. Rim width is measured from the inside of the inner and outer rim flanges. To measure offset you take a straightedge across the back of the wheel (tire off helps) and measure down the mounting surface of the wheel. Call this measurement B. Subtract
from B the quantity of one half of the wheel width (W) plus the back rim flange thickness (F).

So you have O/S = B-(1/2W + F)

Offset can be positive or negative depending on how "deep" is the face of the wheel.

I was thinking of getting some 86 944 Turbo phonedials to use as track wheels.

IMO, fully polished Phone dials look pretty darn cool. Night-and-day difference from the standard finish.
