Classic Car Insurance
Trying to find anyone who knows of a classic car insurance company that will insure a 1971 911T in a secured gated driveway carport. Haggerty wont insure in California unless in a garage or locked storage unit. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Over in the market place forum, aka peanut gallery, there is an insurance thread that is recent.

Timely thread for me. I'm also in California. I recently bought a 964, and AAA won't issue a collector policy on it. I have a collector policy on my 930, but apparently AAA will only offer (new) policies on cars 1970 or older. My 930 seems to be grandfathered in to its policy. Nevertheless, AAA can't help out the OP.
I obtained quickie online quotes from various companies. Weird how they seem to charge such different amounts (though I'm entering the same information for each quote). Hagerty $774 Grundy $286 Leland West $490 From the quickie online quotes, I cannot seem to get details on the different policies (annual mileage limits, can I use the car for occasional commuting/errands, etc) to see if that makes a difference.

You might talk to an underwriter at http://www.americancollectors.com/
They seem to be a bit more flexible on stuff like this. They may still want it garaged, but it can't hurt to ask.

86 911 Targa. Does car have to be garaged with AAA? Do they do declared value?

I never found an insurance company who would sell me insurance with car in a carport behind an automatic gate. I had to rent a storage space and declare that the location. My insurance savings paid for about half the cost of storage.

I looked into this recently. Prices were great... $400-something annually with Leland West was lowest $ I found... but requirements are stringent. First of all, none of the "collector" or "classic" car insurers want to insure a daily driver---they want to insure cars that are PARKED! And it's necessary to have at least 2 cars. I also found the requirement that the classic car be parked within a sealed, enclosed area to be consistent among all insurers. If parking is at all open to the outside, doesn't fly.
In my case, I have only my 911 and so drive it daily. I also park in a condo parking lot under the building but it's not considered "sealed" (since the parking areas are ventilated.) Didn't matter that there's a 24-hr guarded entrance gate, each lot is fob-gated, and cameras watch every move. Am insured with Metropolitan for close to $800 annually. Standard coverage and I believe $500 deduct. Was excited to cut that almost in half with Leland but didn't work out.

I've had good experiences/rates with American Modern for my 930 and NSX. I currently have SafeCo. Both are stated value policies. Not sure their policies on daily drivers or non-sealed parking. Worth a call though.

Must be garaged with AAA. Agreed upon value. Car must also be 1970 or older.

Be warned, I did have a policies with Safeco. Stated value for my 87 911 and full coverage on 2016 Subaru Forester. My Forester was rear ended by an uninsured motorist. Thank goodness no one was injured and only minor damage
Needless to say they say the will make you whole at the beginning of the Under/Uninsured section then make exclusion for diminished value. They had me take a photo of the damage which they estimated 3 days repair and then it gets to their recommended shop and it's like 2 weeks for the repair. Yet, they know this system under estimates repair times. Why are you still using it then? They did not have a good answer. The was this whole event left a bad taste in my mouth and I've changing all of my policies cars, homes and an umbrella. It was a cheap learning experience $1500 drop in value on the Forester vice $15,000 easy if it happened to the 911. These policies are in Washington state. |

Most classic car policies require you must have one vehicle for each licensed driver in the household. Those policies are designed for cars that spend 90% of their time parked. That is why they will give an agreed value policy. When you talk to insurers that offer traditional insurance for daily drivers, you have to look at what they think your car is worth. At one time I thought about dropping the classic car policy so I checked with a few ‘regular’ insurers. One of them said my car was worth $6k. A minor accident could make the car totaled in their eyes. Another told me they wouldn’t cover comprehensive on a car that old — they would only offer liability. Crazy.

I've posted to this question before but I am very happy with American National Property and Casualty (ANPAC).
I've had their classic car policy, as well as for my "normal" fleet, for over 10 years. I have a 1973 911T which I garage, unfortunately in a secure storage unit as I have no room at home. It has an agreed insurance amount of $50,000. I am limited to 7,500 miles per year and I cannot race it. It has the same coverages as my normal fleet (considerable) and costs me $678 per year. Of course one has to add into that my storage unit fees (considerable) but that's my fault other than the fact that it also serves as my garage and work shop. Rates in Montana will certainly be better than in California but look them up. Tom |

Be aware that all the ads make it sound like the big players in classic insurance will all simply insure your car for the value you ask, just pay accordingly. Not so. I was told by several insurers (many already mentioned in this thread) that my '72 911T that was mechanically restored but was awaiting cosmetic restoration could not be covered for more than $30-40k, max. I fussed, saying that the purchase and work done to make it reliable and drivable was already more than that amount, and I wished to cover it for $70k as it was starting through the cosmetic refresh. No go at most places. Only http://www.americancollectors.com/ was willing to insure for the higher value in anticipation of the ongoing expenses.
