Rev limiting rotor - where exactly is the tip?

Hi all!

My 911 sounds like it is in need of a valve adjustment.

I feel a bit silly to ask, but where exactly is the tip of the rotor to line up with the notch on the distributor? My crank pulley has 2 markings, one painted yellow and one painted white. I can’t see a “Z1” marking, so I want to be as sure as I can be that I’ve got it lined up correctly

Thank you

What year car? Brush some of the rust off your pulley and you might see the z1 mark.

Will give that a go thanks! Should’ve started there

It’s a 1976 911 S with a numbers matching 2.7

After a bit of cleaning I found some markings. Great suggestion!

Z1 aligns with the yellow pen marks, and the rotor seems to line up nicely with that too.

Also found the 120/240deg markings, and I’m halfway through adjusting the valves.

My 1974 914 2.0 had the same rev limiting rotor and markings for timing. One day my brother switched my rotor with one from a VW bug that stopped at 4,200 RPM or something way low. I left to go back to work, and it would shut off just as the power (limited as it was) started to come on. I knew what he had done right away, and turned around and made him put mine back on.

It is old technology, but it works in a simple way. Take your time, and get it right, and drive your car and smile the happy smile of success when done.

Your rotation is clockwise on 2.7.
Looks like you’re a cog off because clockwise you should be coming up to the mark, not past it.
