Idle Mixture adjust on 3.2L Carrera engine
I have a 3.2L engine that occasionally dies on cold idle. After checking many other parts, I have concluded that I need to adjust the idle mixture at the MAF to richen it at idle.
I understand that it takes a 3mm long allen key to adjust. What is the direction of turn of the key. Looking straight at the adjusting nut (it would be in the upside down position) is it turning clockwise or counter-clockwise to richen the mixture. And 1/4 turn at a time?

Leaner is counter-clockwise (turn key to the left) and vice versa

Usually the "new" problem is a symptom of another problem. 3.2s are legendary for sucking intake gaskets, or intake nuts being simply loose. When the engine is cold the gaps are greatest, heats up and gaps shrink.

Checked that. There are no leaks at the intake manifolds. The gaskets on the right are all new. Smoke test shows zero leakage, anywhere.

Idle Mixture adjust on 3.2L Carrera engine
Go real easy on the key. Try 1/4 turn at a time. Make sure car is up to temp, disable ICV, and if you’re really trying to get lucky, disable the O2 sensor.
I nailed it perfectly a few years ago prior to my 2nd rebuild without an AFR meter etc. I merely got lucky that first time around. I have not been able to dial my car in correctly ever since. Anyhow, best of luck - especially if you’re going at it w/o a meter. This reminds me, it’s about time I purchase a proper AFM ![]() |
