Warning: If you're using the Dr. Buzinski Cig Lighter Mod....

Put a new USB charger in my socket today, turned on the car, and it just about caught fire. I had the usb charger rotated incorrectly so the side terminals were buried in the spacer sleeve, shorting out. I currently have the fresh air blower out and am assessing the damage. Will report back soon....

Damn Jameel, that sucks.
Lighter wire runs in harness to 6 pin female through body blower motor plug then through entire harness back to fuse 16. Likely the longest wire in the dash harness. Hopefully it didn’t melt a bunch of insulation on the other harness wires.

I just pulled the car into the garage to further assess. I may need to call you!

Damn and I was about to do that mod. Might have to rely on my USB battery power brick stuck between my seats a little longer.

Jameel - can you post your issue on that other thread below? Better to bring this to light on that thread as well...

I don’t understand the reason for this mod when a simple short USB charger like this works perfectly. I’ve had this in my car for 3yrs and had it once come out. The other times I had to use a USB cable to pull it out. No issue with the cig port, unless the 87+ cars got a different cigarette lighter.

Jameel -- did you shorten the sleeve per the instructions contained in post #6 of the above thread before installing?

Not enough evidently! I'm not sure what changed this time around because I was running this exact setup for the last 3 years without issue. Just got unlucky I guess.

Here's a video I did explaining how I think my short happened. Feel free to post corrections or ideas. This is just a theory....

Sorry to hear about you letting the smoke out Jameel. You will spend many hours redoing wiring, but you will get it.

A previous owner of my late 72 T wired an alarm to the clock power. Half a wiring harness later Ralf Meany had everything working again. His office was loaded with 914 trophies and racing memorabilia

Hopefully yours will not be as dramatic.

Thanks much Bob. I've worked on 90% of this car at this point, so I'm not afraid of tackling anything, but the hassle of tearing out the harness has me a bit ticked off, especially this time of year. Just itching to drive after four months of it being parked. Grr!! Someone should start a thread on what circuits are un-fused so we can all make our cars safe. Funny to mention the clock and a 72T! I know a local guy who had melted clock wires in his 72T!

While you are at it, fuse your instrument lights, since they aren’t. All you have to do is change a bulb, and not turn off the light switch and bump the bulb socket against the metal dash opening and fzzzzzzzzzz. Ask me how I know. This was on a 73, but even through 89 are not fused.

Glad you are handy and now you’ll get intimate with wiring.

We need a good tutorial thread on exactly what and where to add fuses that Porsche evidently forgot about.
