The changes I did (model '85) :

- 3A fuse to the dash-lights at the light switch (BLK/BLU wire)
- 3A fuse to the ash-tray light at the dash-switch
- 7.5A fuse near the front condensor blower for the AC (the fuse in the fusebox is not enough to prevent that wire from melting as it combines a lot of circuits, per technical bulletin Porsche)
- 15A fuse near the A/C blower relay in the smugglars box
- 10A fuse (x2 left / right) near the footwell blower motors
- radio/amp on separate 10A fuse with separate wiring form BAT+ terminal
- Headlight/high-beam relay kit to save the expensive light switch from high currents

What 'heater lever' circuit are you talking about (wire colour code plz) ?

It makes no sense. The fusible protection should be as close to the power source as possible.

It is the one part of the car that just drives me nuts.

That's why I sometimes have to laugh about superiority "German engineering"

Probably contracted the electrical work out to Lucas. :D

I heard that the Germans invented the intermittent windshield wiper and the British invented intermittent fuel pumps, lights, radio, ignition.......................................... .

Old Ferrari’s have fuse boxes that melt and gauges made by Vaglia, pronounced Vague-liar. How the Italians managed to put Lucas and Bosch parts into their cars is still a mystery.

Occasionally, one of our fine P cars might leak a drop or two of oil - but it is said that when the Jaguar quits leaking oil, IT IS OUT OF OIL.

The bad wiring was all the fault of Ernst Fuhrmann. He ran Porsche from 1972 to 1980. For whatever reason he hated the 911, and wanted to replace it with the 928. He could not kill it outright because the 911 was a big seller. He forbid all new R&D of the 911 and only allowed the minimum upgrades. The 959 was developed behind his back, and without his knowledge.

When he was replaced by the American Peter Schutz in 1981, one of the first things Schutz did was start R&D on the 911. That is why we ever got the 964 or the 993, total redesigns from scratch.

The Carrera is as we all know just the same design from the 1970s with updates.

So blame Fuhrmann.

poor electrical design on the 911 pre-dates Fuhrmann

my theory is that if it didn't make the car go faster (power/handling), the development was left to interns

Once at an old car flea market, I saw indicator labels for switches in antique British cars. For a three position switch, the labels listed “off”, “dim” and “flicker”

Frank,
Grey/Green is my recollection. You'll find it close to the ash tray light wiring.

Grazie mille !
Another circuit to fix/protect...
