What are differences between '72 T and S Models

Hi Everyone,

I'm restoring at '72 T. I would like to possibly build it to S specs and I want to understand all the differences.

Suspension
Brakes
Instruments
Cooling
Engine
Body

Thanks,

Rodney

In 72 (at least in Italy) they sold S options for your T.

It was cheaper tax wise to option a T to S spec than order an S.

You could ask who has a T with S options
(I think it was basically everything except the engine)

starting with the appearance options like Fuches wheels etc.

Suspension;
Same tbars, T had no base sways but the S 15/15 was an option, shocks are the same both had options of Koni or Bilstein
Brakes;
t used M f/r s had S front and M rear, both have the same rotors and 19mm m/c
Instruments;
t had 4 gauge w/the S 5 gauge option
Cooling;
t no frt oil cooler, S has a front fender radiator cooler
Engine;
here's the big difference,t- 7.5 cr 133 SAE hp@5600, S 8.5 cr 181 SAE hp @6500 t has cast iron cylinder, S has a finned alloy jacket around the cylinders, cams were different t 16 30 42 4, S 38 50 40 20, S has bigger ports 36/35 vs 32/32
Body
S has a bigger gas tank oe and front air dam which were optional on T, s has wider al/rubber trim strips on bumpers and side, interior was nicer on S w/ leather option on t

trans is the same, 6" Fuchs std on S opt on T

Thanks for the info bill.

Could you please explain the brakes? It looks like my T has M calipers, but then drums in the back?

Did the S have aluminum front S brakes and rears were disk? Right?

Also could you please clarify the gauge part? What is extra on the S?

Thanks,

Rodney

There were differences on the T vs S here in the usa
Not all s came with oil cooler. Then there were some with a loop cooler and others with radiator coolers.
Alloy s calipers and sway bars were optional on the T as well as leather. The gas tanks in usa were the same for all models. Plastic larger tanks for row S and of course the RS
4 speed was standard on the T but most were ordered with 5 speeds
70-71 models had more differences than 72-73 range
DRUM brakes? I think you might be confused with the parking brake. ALL 911 cane with disc brakes

Ha! you are right I was thinking about the parking brake. I remember tearing it apart and being careful about the parking brake! It does have discs in the back.

So, the rear brakes on the S and the T were the same, it is just the fronts had the Aluminum S calipers?

Correct. Rear brake systems were identical. Front struts had 3.5 inch mounting spacing on the S vs 3 inch on the standard T.. So you can't just buy S (or A ) calipers and bolt them on.

My '72 T was optioned with the Appearance package, 15" Fuchs and F&R sway bars. Many were optioned like this. With these options, the differences from an S are the front spoiler, more powerful S motor, front brake calipers (and associated strut housing) and oil cooler.

All T came w/ M front calipers and M rear calipers, all 911 have a drum parking brake in back, all 911 thru '83 have the same front rotors and the same rear rotors w/ incorporporated parking brake

S came w/ aluminum S calipers on the same rotors as the T w/ iron M calipers

The extra S gauge is the oil combo gauge w/ oil level and temp, many T's had this as an option, like the 6" Fuchs and front spoiler and trim pieces but it also depended on the importer for a specific market, In the US there was an S Package w/ most of the S pieces except for the engine and sways bars

Never seen an S w/o a right front radiator cooler, the loop cooler was introduced for MY'73 and may have been used on a few end of the MY72 cars, Yes, the sways and leather and spoiler and 6" Fuchs w/ 185/70VR15 were all options(5.5" steel w/ 165HR15 was std for T), some dealers may have put S calipers on but I've never seen an option code for that, even the S had a standard 4 speed w/ 5 speed option and lsd was another option

T had a std 16.4gal gas tank S 29 gallons which was optional on T

I've still got all the original literature from my first 911 which was a '72

Brakes and oil cooler were not part of the appearance group for US cars
