Weber 40IDA - Where to buy parts? Leaky accelerator pump cover
Before I contact different vendors and manufacturers, I wanted to ask here:
My 1979 911 SC has Weber 40IDA 3C carbs. The driver's side carb is leaking slightly from the accelerator pump area. I haven't pulled anything apart because I don't have any spares on hand and the car runs well. My understanding regarding the accelerator pump leaks is that the cover warps. Flattening the cover may be sufficient in addressing the problem. Where can I buy replacements parts and rebuild kits? |

I was able to flatten mine by sliding it back and forth on sandpaper over a very flat surface. I think I used 1,000 wet or dry and a piece of marble (it was a while ago)

Those covers just need to be resurfaced on some 80 grit and something flat. They get warped from the corner screw tension. Easy job.

Thanks all. I suppose I can pull the cover and check the diaphragms. I don't want to open a can of worms and not be able to get replacement parts.
Going out for a drive in today's current situation is not to be taken for granted. Though I do wonder how much of a leak is too much of a leak when it comes to gas. |

Remove the four 7mm hex nuts securing the top cover of the accelerator pump, leave existing gasket in place and flatten per John Walker's suggestion. I use 220 grit paper. Do not over-tighten the 7mm hex nuts!
You can buy accelerator pump gaskets that PMO makes for their carbs which uses the same pump design as Weber: Accel Pump Diaphragm The Italian source is found on eBay with the seller name of Alfa1750 so you can order easily that way.

Work slowly, checking your progress every few minutes. All of the parts you might need, if any are damaged, are readily available. Unless you have a unusual situation, the pumps usually come apart pretty easily, but we never know what people might run into. re the danger of driving with leaking pumps - fire is possible - which would change a small inconvenience into a major repair job. I carefully cleaned the area with brake cleaner today. I then ran the fuel pump and worked the throttle. I did not start the engine as I did not have time.
I can hear the accelerator pump squirting. The driver side is louder than the passenger side. However, I don't see or feel any leaking fresh gas. I took a couple pictures as well in case anything stands out to others. Most of the moisture I noticed is on the components designated by the red circle. Any thoughts? My covers were warped. I took the sand paper flat surface route and all was good. |

The great guru of Webers, without a doubt, as mentioned, is Mike Pierce of Pierce Manifolds, Guilroy, California. Has done all of the Webers on my old V12 Ferraris and has the machine to straighten out the warped bodies, and correctly flow test the carb. I also tried gently sanding the bottoms of the carbs on a piece of glass, but he gets it right without damaging these rare and expensive units. Has a gazillion Weber parts and is a real car guy. Tell him Steve Meltzer passed along his name. (He was recently named one of the top restorers in the country by Sports Car Magazine. (about a year ago). steve
