Oil Change with front oil cooler
So, finally finished installing the front fender cooler last year. Did my first oil change here last a couple of weeks ago with a front oil cooler. I just did the normal thing, emptying the tank and then engine. It got me thinking how necessary it is to drain the oil that is in the front cooler and in the lines to the front cooler? I figure that the dilution factor of the old oil in the lines/front cooler degrading the new oil would at best be minimal and not all that important. My question is how would you drain the cooler and oil lines if you don' t have the fitting to blow it out and secondly does a lot of ppl here drain it when they do an oil change if you don't have the fitting to blow back the oil to the tank?
Just curious and I did do a search here and read about 6 pages but didn't find any info. Thanks.

I don't worry about that as I change oil every 3k...I just change it when as hot as I can get the oil.
At 3k the oil is hardly 'used up' additive wise and with the new 10.5 quarts or so hardly anything to lose sleep over.

You’re correct the new oil gets diluted. A rough guess would be after an oil change you’re already 10% ready for the next one. No worries.

You can add an air fitting and blow it out. But that's crazy.
For 20 years, I've just drained the tank and the case.

I don't even bother with the case. Almost nothing comes out.
I do an oil change on ALL the vehicles every six months so it doesn't get the chance to go bad. |

I just bought a suction puller and evac’d both lines and the front cooler. It was maybe a little over 1 liter total

When I suctioned the front cooler lines, I ran the tube far into the lines (towards the cooler) on both lines. |

Thanks for the info fellas... kiinda what I thought on dilution and seriously didn't think making a 15 minute job into hours just to get a a couple quarts of oil... shoot it leaks that much! Be safe and practice social distancing....

I disconnected the lines at the external thermostat in front of the pass rear tire.
Ironically those are usually hard/impossible to remove, but I had leaks there and mine were fairly loose. I used one of these to suck the oil out: https://www.harborfreight.com/Deluxe-Manual-Fluid-Extractor-and-Dispenser-56384.html Works really well. |

Like Jack said, just ignore it. After 25 years and over 100,000 miles, I just drain the tank and the engine on my 3.2. About 1 quart or so come out of the engine. I like to see and clean the magnet in the engine case.
The oil in the lines and the cooler are not worth the extra effort.

Just drill a hole in the bottom of the front cooler then install a sheet metal screw with some dum dum on it.
