It’s all fun and games until this happens
Porsche ownership is an exhilarating experience, but occasionally there is a horrifying discovery. Here’s a recent one of mine....

Bummer! But you wanted to detail your motor anyway, right?

Did we give up when the germans bombed pearl harbor? Atleast it didn't break flush at the case.

As far as the headnut is screwed onto the stud, it might have been starting to pull out of the block. Something to check!

For me, finding one of those led to a 3.6L

The nut spins so I’ve moved it from where it was when I found it. The nut spins easily on the stud, so it is something of a stress reliever to spin it mindlessly. So far it isn’t working very well ![]() Here are a couple of photos of current state of affairs. This wasn’t in the plan until the broken stud was found while adjusting valves. Jeff p.s. the posters on the wall aren’t mine... ![]()

I read this prior to being able to scroll down to seen the pic's......I was expecting something that involved rubber sheets and a questionable kitchen utensil.

That’s a sobering find. These cars are between 30 and 50 years old now and not getting cheaper to own. Beyond studs, you now face the inevitable “might as well” valve job, clutch and pressure plate, and cam/rocker inspection. It’s a whole flowchart that can get expensive (and 2x expensive if you don’t DIY.)
PS- times have changed for sure. The Snap-On calendar was standard issue at any repair shop.

Coming back together
I just wanted to share some photos of the project as it is moving forward.
The engine looked brand new inside, other than the broken cylinder head stud. The new studs are certainly meatier than the originals. It was a good opportunity to freshen up the cylinder heads, new seals and gaskets, etc. ![]() ![]() ![]()
