A pair of long needlenose works great here if you do not have the special tool. Just stick the tips in the slots opposite each other and turn the handles.

Charels & Wil -- what years are your cars?

charlesbahn 07-16-2006 05:40 PM

Mine's a 1985 turbo look cab.

Wil Ferch 07-16-2006 06:22 PM

Mine's an 85 USA spec 911 Carrera coupe.....

PS--- why do you ask ?

randywebb 07-16-2006 07:08 PM

Thx -- I asked b/c I suspect that triangle that's in the way may be something only in the newer 911's...

Wil Ferch 07-16-2006 07:16 PM

Okey dokey, then....it may be USA spec cars to be "lockable" for the trunk...maybe not a Euro gov't regulation concern?

It seems GeorgeK's car didn't have the triangle/lock..and that open cars like Targa's and Cab's may have them world-wide. Maybe others will provide added insight "builds" on this premise....

This thread is great...

Re: the dash light fuse... Is no one concerned about the ashtray bulb? Is it fused elsewhere? It definitely is not on the same circuit as the rest of the dash lights.

Also, for posterity, neither my '83 RoW SC nor '79 US 930 (both coupes) have the "Ferch triangle".

Thanks - funny I looked up this old thread last nite - need to do this & nice to know the triangle, at least, is not likely to be in the way...

FWIW, the schematic shows 14 - yes, FOURTEEN, separate wires going to the switch.

Quick question.

I've heard another potential problem point in the 80s was shorting above the glove box light. Would the headlight switch fuse protect this spot?

On my '83 RoW it does not.

Has anyone fused the glove box and ash tray lights?

I investigated further... On mine, the glove box light is protected by fuse #18. Same circuit as Interior light, clock, luggage compartment light, etc.

Skip - your '79 930 or your '83 SC?

Sorry... SC. Haven't checked if the 930, yet.

George,

Is that Steve Mcqueen's 930??

Color combination is very unique!

Thanks, luis g.

I've got a couple of thoughts on this:

the light switch also contains a potentiometer (variable resistor) circuit to provide full source voltage or to dim the instrument bulbs. That's two switches in the path; two potential locations for voltage drop (i.e. less voltage to the bulbs = dim bulbs). Perhaps a separate relay and switch can be introduced here, in parallel with the light switch to provide full source voltage to the light bulbs when dimming isn't needed.

I am replacing my headlight switch because of a bad dimmer/potentiometer. I am interested in 911pcars dimmer/potentiometer bypass relay idea. Has anyone tried this? The triangular plate may be a perfect place to mount a toggle switch.

just spent 2 hrs going over this post and links...
IS THERE 1 THREAD SUMMARIZING A LISTING OF ALL OF THE FUSES TO PUT IN AND CIRCUIT BREAKER STRIPS TO REPLACE OE FUSE BARS... BASICALLT address ALL of the SC elect potential problem area'S?
Thanks Bob

Would a 5A fuse suffice for this application?

Cheers,
Kato

Wil Ferch 08-14-2008 11:11 AM

2A or 3A ........
