Question re: Targa Vent Window

Hey Pelicans:

As an initial matter, I’ve searched and searched but haven’t been able to find a definitive answer on this. I have been able to find instructions for removing the door card, so I’m covered there if that’s the fix.

The problem: The driver door on my 84 Targa needs a good slam in order to close. Without a slam, it pops back as the latch doesn’t engage.

Upon careful investigation, I found that the vent window makes premature contact with the A-pillar seal. I’m guessing this is the issue as you can see the panel/glass flex when shutting the door—not ideal.

The question: What’s the fix for pitching the vent window glass out (away from the car) and/or adjusting the vent window to prevent contact until the door is completely closed?

Of course, any other thoughts or advice would be appreciated. NOTE: My seals are new and appear to be installed correctly—or, at least, as correctly as possible.

Thanks in advance!

I just re-aligned the glass on both sides. Now that you have the door-card out, you can move the “vent glass” a bit. There are several adjustment points here; and there is a fair amount of trial and error.

Here are the screws you’re going to be working with.

...they are under those two little plastic covers — there are 2 of them.

Then,

(That is the passenger side, sorry I don’t have a D-side pic)

This is a critical bolt that holds the “a-frame” to the door shell. You can add, subtract or adjust the angle at which your glass frame sits. On the other side of that bolt is this:

You will need an Allen wrench, some (a LOT) of patience and time. I went through this on my thread about targa glass seals. Best luck; I hope your car is more sorted than mine was.

Thanks for this, and for the detailed reply with pictures. Seems we’re all tackling those “headache projects” these days.

I found the two Allen screws during my research earlier today—both on the forum and around the car. However, after giving them a few turns, I couldn’t seem to get much of anything to budge. Should the two Allen screws give me enough wiggle room to push the “vent” (or triangle) window away from the car a bit? Perhaps I didn’t unscrew them enough. The door card is still on the car...for now. I was hoping to be able to get this done without diving in too deep.

As for the Targa, it is extremely well sorted. 12 months and $$$$$ did the trick!

Update: Based on the poor fit of my top (and some additional research), I am convinced that my car has the dreaded 964 front seal.

The front of my top does not sit low. The rear seal has an appreciable gap. The driver side vent window hits the front seal way before door latch engagement. And the list goes on.

I elected to reach out to Targa Dan for his expert opinion (and parts). Once I confer with the guru, I will revert with more info, for posterity if nothing else.

Well, since you’ve reached out to Dan, he will set you straight. The front seal (above the windscreen) is a source of frustration of many; that in mind, I purchased the front seal from Dan rather than attempt to make a modification to the 964 version that is currently available.

SO:

Taking a step back here, you will not be able to do much of any adjusting until you pull the door card, and get access to the bolt that holds the bottom of that vent-window glass in place. The two bolts in the front of the door shell aren’t going to get you much of any adjust-ability.
