Cuts out and doesn’t like idling

Hi guy,

First of all I have a 1975 911s 2.7L LHD from California and it’s not running right.
I have owned the car for 2 years as a side project and I have never driven it but I have videos of it driving from the guy I purchased it off.

Anyway to the problem....

When I turn the key it doesn’t want to start
But if I push the accelerator down just a little it starts,
and if I keep the accelerator in the same place its fine but as soon as I take my foot off the pedal the car dies straight away,

I have tried adjusting the idle screw both ways and it doesn’t seem to make a difference.

The car has a new fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel filter and the fuel distributor rebuilt as it was leaking.

Also a new CDI box, ignition leads, ignition coil, starter motor and battery.

So like I said your help is greatly needed so I can get it on the road for the first time!

Thanks

Are you pulling up the hand throttle (next to / left of the hand brake) to engage the cold start circuit? The engine needs more fuel on cold start so all those components need to be operable.

What happens if you keep the accelerator pressed for 1-2 minutes and then let it idle?

What's been done to the engine? Is it the original CIS?

Here is the starting procedure, and links to adjusting the hand throttle if needed.

Right guys it’s been some time!
I think I found my problem but I need your help,

So I got new fuel injectors and made sure the fuel distributor was spraying out equal on all 6 injectors.

This is what I found... car wasn’t idling because the plate wasn’t getting to the right height to release the fuel and air wasn’t passing the plate.

Photo 1 Engine off- plate is at normal height.
(This is what height I would expect to see the plate ones the fuel pump is on... or am I wrong?)

Photo 2 Fuel pump running - the plate is to low so as I turn the key to start it and the plate raises up like it should do, it’s not enough to start the the injectors.

Photo 3 The height the fuel starts to spray from the injectors / this is the height it should be on idle, up enough so air can pass and start the injectors.

So really what I’m asking is how I adjust the plate hight up so when the fuel pump is on it’s sat at the right height?

Before you ask, this is how I think I found the problem...

I wedged a block under the leaver so when the pump is on it doesn’t drop.. then when I start the engine the plate rises and the car idles at 1000/950 RPM like it should, this is why I think the hight is my problem.

Any help welcome please

Search adjusting CIS air sensor plate for a 75. My 74 had this issue and the adjustment is made by bending the strange clip in your photo to change the stop height for the plate. A schematic makes it clear. Basically your improvised stop has to be duplicated with the clip. Good luck, John.

Thank you John, Nothing seemed to come up when I searched.. you wouldn’t happen to have a link do you? Just had a look at it again...

where you referring to this clip to bend?

When I make it longer to push the plate up it dose that but when the pump is running it still pushes the plate down!

As the plate goes down that clip gets lose and affectively does nothing to prevent the plate from moving down to much.
