I found an old 3 speed BW in the back, spiffed it up a bit, and told him it would get him through the night. He won the feature, and it let go on the parade lap. I opened up my 915 a couple of years ago, said to myself "this ain't no Borg Warner". I determined it would not make it to the parade lap and sent it to CMS.

They cost a lot because they are lightweight precision powerplants, mated to a bunch of lightweight precision stuff so you can go fast with utter confidence. Lightweight precision power costs money; ask the aircraft guys. And, there are few people these days that really know how to fix them, or make them work properly.

Lastly, "if it don't go, chrome it!".

Right...

Don't blush, Marc, but take a bow! You've worked darned hard to be the best, and you're the only guy who I know that I would trust to refresh 'MY' 915 transmission! Or to replace the head studs on 'MY' 911 SC!

Here you go Garen, pics of Thatch's car.
The gold cad came out a bit dark, but we both liked it.

Marc the engine pics look great. Incredible attention to detail, and incredible restrain to keep it within the same spec and finish as what the factory did. The pride in your workmanship is quite apparent in those shots.

Wanted to see that car with the red stacks. Looks like a proper high-butterfly MFI intake from the small pic you posted.

LS / small-block: By the spec sheet not as exotic, but simplicity is exotic in its own way. In the late 90s a friend and I were able to get a project car allocation from GM, to be displayed in the GM SEMA booth. It was a Trans-Am WS6. I did the design work for the project (we de-complicated the car, took a bunch of the multiple lines and creases the Pontiac cars had back then, basically took the aesthetic "bling" off the car as much as we could), and my buddy did the mechanicals. His shop specialized in gen 3 F bodies and Corvettes. The LS1 was new, and it was a huge technological step above the prior SB motor. O-rings instead of cork gaskets, better parts, really efficient heads, etc. And also tiny, easy to package. Bored it out to 'near' 421 cubes, made about 600 at the crank. There is something to be said about the small blocks, even though I am a Porsche guy through and through. I just respect other things that are worthy of respect. There is room in our hobby for all the flavors.

Having said that, I would totally think it would be neat to see someone throw a Cayenne / Panamera V8 in a basket-case air-cooled chassis. Most likely much heavier than an LS, but hey, it'll be a Porsche in a Porsche...

While a bunch of chrome is not my taste, I don't think it looks bad in any way, and certainly don't see anything strange about pimping-up an engine bay; not sure what pNutz is carrying on about!

Nutz, are you saying that your Targa's, go-pretty-slow engine bay is jacknasty?!?! Take some pride in that bisch, bro!!!

Garen, You are correct, the car with the Red trumpets, is the 1973 Factory Martini RSR known as R5. One of the 3 factory RSR's from that year. The "real deal". If you check out photos on our FB page "Red Line Porsche Service", you'll see a few more. We had a client when I shared a location with Carl Thompson of Vasek Polack fame, who owned that RSR as well as a 906 and a 908 coupe. It was certainly an honor to wrench on such history. Also in the photos you'll see the Diego Puebles RSR, in Brumos colors. Good times! There are some photos from F2000, I was a lead wrench and crew chief, and also some Ferrari Challenge Montreal, Cup Cars, fun stuff.
Enjoy

Been around it a long time. Dad was racing a Speedster on the east coast when I was born. Bridghampton, Lime Rock, etc. Grew up around it, became a mechanic in the early 80's, always loved the track. Went through Jim Russell at Riverside in 84. The Glen every summer, etc. Nothing like a long, hard days work at the track. Always was a good driver, but at 6'2" and 200+, and short on talent ($$$$$), but I was always fast.

The smell, The smell!

Of course, whatever floats your boat, I'm just yanking the muscle car dress-up boyz's chain

As to the targa, I'm already behind and busy enough keepin up her real needs, alternator's acting up recently. Besides, I'll give it to the caveman, there's only so much you can do with the CIS contraption.

It really boils down to engineering (and budget).

How about 1000 hp, emissions compliant, 11,000 rpm redline, 500 lb ft torque and designed for a street vehicle? Cosworth designed.

Equally impressive is the tub this beast is supposed to compliment... And it's a "street car" by the thinnest of margins. But it's supposed to get a license plate, so good enough in my book!!!

Quite an engine...100hp for every 1000 Rpm!... When it is buzzed up to 11K it must sound 10 times more than a ‘pocket rocket’

They must be just a larger version of their original V12, as it had the same 11K RPM, but half the hp - 500hp

Trivia: Their original V12’s design were based on two of Fords V6’ Duratec’s.

As many may remember, Cosworth was ‘very’ big with Ford for decades... Ford at one time owned both Cosworth and Aston Martin.

I only mention this, as the article made a reference to Fords 3rd generation Coyote...Like their 5.2 litre Voodoo; both are naturally aspirated.
