My M&K weighs 15lbs http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1596427224.jpg

3.3SS engine power

I think the benefit of the full Xtreme weld and D-port machine is to keep the port area smaller then a 3.2L head for better velocity on the low end but still flow as well on the top end for a broader power band. At least that’s my theory on why a small port 3.0L hits so much harder on corner exit and then the 3.2Ls walk on by. With really good heads and the right cam, maybe you can have both.

From idle to about 4K, this engine is merely strong but from there on up to about 7500 it is a screamer. Something I don't think I mentioned is that I have added a spring loaded single contact switch that activates the cold start valve at wide open throttle to add fuel to the mixture. This drops the A/F ratio from about 14.5 down to about 13:1. The CIS is a real FrankenCIS system that uses an early CIS large port airbox, 1980 fuel distributor, WUR and other hardware and is set up much like a 73 1/2 system. It probably shouldn't work but does quite well! The car can sit for days if not weeks at a time and will start by just reaching in thru the window and turning the key! After about 5-10 seconds the idle smooths out and runs at about 1200 rpms until it is completely warmed up. One other thing that helps the performance is that I have a lightweight interior, an RS fiberglass rear bumper and front valence and have done some other things to bring the weight down to about 2400 lbs. I have been very happy with the way everything turned out!

JackkTheMakk,

Looks like your engine is coming right along! One thing I would mention is to be very careful assembling the engine case as it is quite easy to damage one or more of the oil pump seals that go between the oil pump and the block! I learned the hard way and had to tear down a brand new engine and do it all over again! A word to the wise!

No have not started motor yet. Sent muffler to Brian for some custom work. Should have it back next week. Then off to Pinks for dyno and break in.

JackkTheMackk 08-23-2020 06:20 AM

Slowly making progress. Ended up ditching my red box glyco GT3 rod bearings for Mahle/Clevite and purchased main bearings direct from Porsche $$. Worth the saving myself from the headache in the long run. Main bearings came out to .002” across the board with a dial bore indicator and plastigauge.

Waiting for my new rod bearings monday and then it’s go time for the short block.

No, haven't started yet. Just installed the headers and 997 GT3 muffler. Hopefully this week. I will post a video http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1598192760.jpg

I did a top end on my 3.0 and ditched CIS for EFI/ITBs last year and at the time it stressed me the hell out as I was pretty budget constrained, but I also learned a ton and made a list of things I'd do if my rebuild blew up on me (so far so good, minus a slight leak), so it's fun to live vicariously through this thread as this is almost exactly what I *wanted* to do, heh.

Fun thread, thanks for sharing.

I never intended to spend this much with the rebuild but while i’m young, single, and have no bills or responsibilities i figured i may as well :D I sold a couple motorcycles and it definitely helped fund the build.

Which EFI set up did you go with?

Weird.. why did he cap off the end and make new inlets? Seems like that would defeat the purpose of the “free flowing gt3 muffler”. I’m taking my set up to a fab guy in LA and he’s going to make me elbows to run loud and quiet inlets with a cut out.

Did he put in internal pipe in the to guide the exhaust or just put the pipe straight on there? Looks like yours inlet goes straight into the muffler exit pipe? Never seen anyone do it like that.

I don't think so, when I looked in it was a straight shot in.

Great build you're doing Jack. Droolworthy indeed---have never seen a more pristine case. Would like to talk to EMS. Searched for them via Google but couldn't find. Who is "EMS?"

Engine Machine Services in Inglewood, CA. Not cheap but amazing work.. I spent $3,400 just there.

Thanks Jack. From the looks of it, quality is a living art with these guys. You obviously know who to go. Looking forward to follow your journey.

It was my decision to cap ends. I didn't want the active system. I just wanted loud. The other reason was I had already purchased RSR headers with flanges and I wanted to be able to switch to my M&K GT3 muffler if want.

Everyone who want “loud” runs the loud inlet. He capped your loud inlet and quiet inlet and cut new whole to make his own inlets which look like they run straight into the exit pipe on the cut out diagram. I have never seen anyone do that and everyone who runs the GT3 runs the factory inlets with custom fabbed elbows that run from the headers to muffler. Do you see what i’m saying by the cut out?

911 SLANT 08-23-2020 07:40 PM

Yes, your correct. The red shows where the cut out enters the muffler. Straight loud and out the to the tips. This is definitely different. We will see how it works out. I hope it still gives me the sound I'm looking for.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1598240404.jpg

All gt3 rod bearing clearances came out .0021"-.0022". Need to have the rods resized to .0028" and then she'll be ready to seal the case!

Wondering what your rough budget is for this build. I am still on the fence between a 3.2ss and just turboing my 3L

I plan to make a detailed cost list when i’m finished but i would estimate around $30k when I’m finished. And that is my doing all labor myself except machining.

Here's a short video of first startup of my 2.8 with 997 GT3 RS muffler/M&K headers. https://youtu.be/sCT58lyGs7o
