Loose steering wheel. - need bushing replaced?

I have the wheel off but can’t tell which is the bushing is it closest to the shaft?..photos.
Do I need to take off the star washer as well? In one photo, this is a piece I found around the column.. broken..washer? How do you get to the bushing, can’t get a grip on it?.. more ways than one!

that's just the outer ring of it.
there is more inside, the sleeve bit.
you must pry it out.

then you can install the 928-metal sleeve

Is it the closest to the steering shaft? Do I have to take off the star washer? Any idea why only, what sounds like 1 half the horn is working?.. high pitch one! Just started when I took off the wheel.
Thanks so much

The star washer only comes off if you install the rennline steering support bushing. Im probably the only person who did both the 928 and the rennline fix for the loose steering wheel issue. The 928 sleeves could get same day so I went for it. It works but I like the idea of the rennline one that doesnt even need lubrication. So I swapped when it arrived and am going to keep it that way.

Slide something thin down the shaft of the steering wheel, if it moves or you find bits of plastic you need to do the rennline or 928 fix. It's quite straight forward and looks like you're a candidate for the fix.

or you just buy new steering wheel bearing and use just the teflon ring..it will last you another 20 years....if you have some little pieces dropped inside do not worry too much about it.The pieces are already so brittle there is no harm.If you choose to get the original bearing...remove the teflon ring.prior instlation remove the star ring. The teflon ring is good to grind of the little lip on the botom. To install it get same diameter pipe and push it on.Then the star ring and the C clip...
Looks like this

This lip i`m poiting the screwdriver,it will look with the sunshine clip on top and to push the sunshine clip on used flat head screwdriver .
Personally i do not recomend to anybody the 928 metal sleeve..it transfers too much vibration to the steering wheel. The Porsche disigners made it out of teflon for good reason....

HI Ivan

this the same as in yours?

(PIC 1) part of bearing or sleeve?

(PIC 2) looks to me there is no sleeve...is there a broken sleeve still in place in picture?

what do I need? Sunshine clip and Steering wheel bearing? or Sleeve?

thanks so much

Listen to the people saying "Mitch Leland" bushing. It's all you will need, it's relatively inexpensive, and you can do it in five minutes since you've already removed the wheel.

Timely thread to kick my azz into action on this problem. Been ruminating far too long, living with, and grumbling about the rattle over bumps.
Ordered the Mitch fix just now and will be installed as soon as it arrives.

found it!!
is there DIY article to install? Would I need to purchase a Star Washer, or NOT have to remove it?

How would I get out Star Washer without breaking?

thanks

You only need the Leland bushing.

Wipe off any plastic remnants and
just press the new bushing into place with a PCV pipe as a bearing press.
