Arne,
When researching Tire Rack I found a vredestein in the size of 195/65 14. Being a little wider and a bit shorter, and the fact they market as a performance tire, perhaps this is the ticket??http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1593796523.png |
That is still considerably shorter than stock original. It may be an acceptable option if you don't care about the lower gearing and speedometer error that the shorter tires cause. Of course, you already have those issues with the 185/70-14 you are now running.
Again, you may need to consider the possibility that no 14" tire that will fit your narrow 5.5" wide wheels will provide the handling feel that you want or expect. |

to stiffen the sidewall and sharpen the response you need higher pressure -to a point, don't go too far as grip declined eventually shorter sidewalls yes the 65 ratio is shorter than a 70 ratio but it's a ratio that depends on the actual sizes wider wheel w/i spec, 185/70 is spec'd for 4.5 - 6.0, 195/65 is spec'd for 5.5 - 7.0 ie the 195/65 wants an even wider wheel than the 185/70 |
I think the term sidewall stiffness oversimplifies things.
On the technical side, you want more lateral force with less slip angle, and for your particular issue (overshoot on a transient input) you want more of that in the rear than in the front. Aside from width & aspect ratio (wider & lower is better) it's a function of carcass construction (no data - you can only guess from intended tire usage. Speed rating may correlate with that going from a low to a high rating, but may not for smaller changes in rating), tread design (bigger, wider blocks tend to be better than thinner, skinnier blocks), tread depth (less is better) and pressure (more is better up to a point). |

I have been trying to find these tires for sale in 195-205-225/60/15 At the moment i have tire rack working on a special order , but not sure if they will do it. The tires are outstanding as far handling and stability . Crisp and sharp, quite and smooth , only lacking in a downpour. I have put 35k on mine and love them more than toyo proxies R888. No kidding , I'll keep you posted Icarp |
Put 15” rims on it with a decent tire, get it aligned properly somewhere that knows how to do it properly using old Porsche alignment specs, save your 14” wheels for car shows.
All of this will be like night and day. If you’re stuck on the wheels then at least do the alignment one. Good luck Tony |
Icarp, so what size are you currently running the sportrac5? So no sidewall flexing, they feel firm?
Tony, I'm good on alignment. And I'm stuck on these rims, it's such an original car, and with a maxed out garage getting more rims and tires not very likely. It is an excellent idea though. Thanks guys for all your feedback, really appreciate it. |
Robert,
I am now running these tires on my RS clone. The Vredestines are no longer available anywhere in the world . So I am trying these . So far they are good , I push my tires very hard . I have these tires going onto my E today. I've been meaning to call you to ask a few questions. I'll call you if not today, tomorrow. Hope that works for you. |
Robert, Give me a call today as I am free for most of the day .
Air pressure, camber , toe , release agent need 200 miles to wear off , so the new tires are slippery call Ian |
Not sure of your driving objectives, but if modest, I would aim for the basic factory S suspension setup:
- Front/Rear sway bars - Performance shocks (Bilstein, Koni) - Equivalent sport tires and 15" Fuchs wheels - Front and rear alignment - Factory spec suspension bushings (control/suspension arms) Above that, there's lots of archived upgrade paths Sherwood '69 911T |
