Front insert question

I’m changing out the front shock inserts for some koni yellows in my 89. Bogy shocks. They fit great no modifications necessary.

I see some people add oil to the insert tube?
Or grease the insert. This doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. Rust prevention? Cooling the tube?
