Need Help with Correct Spacers & Lug Nuts
Good evening / good morning Pelican Nation,
Restoring an '88 Carrera Targa one piece at a time (was a parts car for five years before I bought it and just smitten with it--always wanted one). Picked up some beautiful 17" Italian made wheels in LA last January. The seller had a great shop in the LA area and showed me the built in spacers on both the front and rear rims, saying I wouldn't need any... . Wheels are glad in good rubber. Front# 225/45ZR17, Back# 245/40ZR17 With an extra cold & snowy winter and the slow downs w/COVID-19, only just yesterday (Friday) mounted the tires and realized the car wouldn't roll... . Front rims hit shocks, rears rub against part of the control arms... So, welcome recommendations... . Graci, Frank ![]() |

I would guess the offsets are all wrong. You can't just buy any wheels and stick them on the car.....

Well, not the 1st or last time I've made a mistake along the way -- don't think there was malice of forethought or intent to decieve by seller (excuse legalise--went law school after my Iraq/Afghan VACAs--lots of Air-n-B time both places). Seller was a very nice man... genuinely so...and as highly regarded by Pelicans in that region (did do a little homework, but obviously not enough).
Fella had them for sale on Craigslist and then ran a reputable shop in the LA area. We first communicated in late November and I finally flew out from Denver in early January (had a few other parts pickups in that area--he even let two people drop stuff off at his shop for me to pickup, to include two fenders from a fellow Pelican). He literally had several containers worth of Porsche 911 parts and a near immaculate garage with five or more Porsches inside to include a 356. I repeatedly asked him about fit both before traveling out there and once there. He pointed out the spacers on the rims and how they mitigated the need for any further mod... . Lessons learned... . BTW, my beloved "88 Carrera Targa was a mere roller, and barely that when purchased with ... wait for it... Chevy wheels... . |

Post a picture of these "built in spacers", and also any markings stamped or cast in the back sides of the spokes. We are going to need to know the width of the rims (both front and rear) and the offsets of each. Then we can advise you on what you will need to get them on the car. They will work, but will need some additional adapters to do so.

If you want my recommendation, sell those wheels and get something period correct that will fit. You can't go wrong with the replica Fuchs, or look for some period correct BBS or Campagnolo wheels. The replica fuchs for sale on Pelican are quite good value IMO.
The ones you have bought belong on a mid-late 90s 993/996/boxster and have a massively different offset to your 88. The size of the spacer you'll need to run will look weird, and will be pushing the limits of what is safe. BBS Wheels: ![]() ![]() Campagnolo ![]() Replica Fuchs Twist Wheels like the ones you have ![]() You will see in the last pic how far inboard the discs are - this is because of the big spacers you will need to run. |

Chevy never used a 5 x 130mm or 5 x 5.12" pattern. Did someone drill out those wheel?

Chevy ½ ton pickup - 5 x 5" is 5 x 127mm. You can bolt them up for rolling around the shop, but not on the road.
