Glasspacks and SSIs or heat exchangers
I posted this on Rennlist, but haven't gotten an answer: has anyone done or thought of mounting Glasspack mufflers to heat exchangers or SSIs? The Glasspacks need flanges welded onto them, but otherwise, look like they might work well.
I was looking at the Dynomax Thrush 24 1/2-inch, 2 1/2-inch diameter Glasspack. Because of their straight through design, would they most likely inhibit low-end torque and increase high-end power as do megaphones? Thanks.

Wouldn't the basic problem be their length and how to support them, or are you thinking of doing some fabricating and putting some 90-degree elbows in there so the Glasspaks run laterally?

I would think the only problem would be they would be a little loud.
Go for it and let us know

They were loudddd, and that was at idle.

Supertrapps....at least if you get busted by the sound police, you can remove some baffles to quiet it down for awhile....add one a week until you back to where you started.....

steve: I haven't thought of how they would mount. For $17 or so from Summit Racing, I figure I don't have anything to lose, and can figure all that out when I get them - "them" being 2 of course.
MikeZ: I thought about Supertrapps, but seeing how large they are, I would think by image alone, they'd overpower the rear of my little narrow car. NOTE: I'm still concerned about low-end torque and high-end power. Any insights from you guys about that? Thanks.

I have the largest they make....3.6 needed them. They make many smaller sizes. Check out Summit Racing.

Funny, I was just looking at this today.
Holley makes a line of stuff under the Flowtech brand that might work. Summit sells it. Check out the Purple Hornies. I'd buy em just for the name. http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLine/Products/ES/ESFT/Muffler.html Scoot

The purple hornies might be a better bet since they have the flanges for the heat exchangers.

Does anyone know the outlet diameter of megaphones? Thanks.

I have previously recommended the Coast mufflers that Tim referenced. They are light, rebuildable, efficient and absolutuly the best sounding 911 muffler I have ever heard, bar none. They are quieter than my Flowmaster/Fabiani.
I first heard them on this RSR ![]() Where they come straight back off the header, but they could also be mounted in a parallel pair, transversely ala stock muffs

I'd go with just about anything before I went with a glass pack.
I have read several articles in various hot rod magazines in the past that said they were detrimental(sp) to power. Besides, you get what you pay for. I completely understand wanting to do something and being on a budget.

Those purple things look too much like what Billy Bob would put on the old Camaro.....

I added a glass pack onto the end of the factory pre-muffler one time just to get myself to a DE before I could get my headers installed. It worked, but it wasn't anything to brag about. No performance gain, but surprisingly it sounded pretty similar to a factory muffler.

Dude.....do you have access to a decible meter? I would be interested in how that set up worked sound level wise......50 feet away, dbA level, not C and at 6,000 rpms......
That's how they test it here at the sound stations on the track....

I don't have access to the meter. I could say it's a little louder than my buddies Mustang GT (I love the GT sound) at idle...and as you go through the rpm range it gets loud! If I ride around at 2800 rpm it's very nice and the tone is perfect...on the other hand at 5000 rpm it's no doubt quite loud and everyone knows I am coming...and their eardrums burst and bleed if I pass them with their windows down! Ha Ha

K9 - I just listened to your sound clip - very sweet indeed. How's your drivetrain and suspension holding up with the 3.6? Is it so far able to handle all the new power?
Exhaust sounds good too. Why don't you run it with just straightpipes - no cats?

The thing that most of the people installing glasspacks, or Supertrapps ignore [or are unaware of] is the need for a crossover pipe [or 'H-pipe'] to be installed ahead of the two 'straight' mufflers... to improve bottom-end torque!!!
