Whats a 74 Carrera Worth?

I am looking at a fully restored 74 Carrera, it has been finished very nicely and there seems to be nothing wrong with it. What's it worth? (The sooner the better.)

Thanks, Alex

To add to this thread (well not really, but I need to share this....), has anyone seen the new Excellence with the 2003 Porsche GT3 on the cover? Inside there is a feature on the most disgustlingly clean impact-bumper 911 I think I've ever seen, and it's a 1974 Carrera. If you haven't, go check the issue out.....there's also an awesome turbocharged 914-6 with 530 horsepower and a real nice '73 with a 3.8 RSR motor.

If you mean this one?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2411977061&category=10156

I'd say it's already at a fair price level, possibly beyond. But this is ebay, so I'm making no predictions.

My favorite car of the issue? Jeff Gamroth can build on hell of a hot rod, can't he? But, ohhh...the cost had to be close to the selling price of the new GT3...

I would have to disagree..

Yelcab..I would have to advise CaCarkid that this could a very attractive car. Call Andial, and ask what their cost is to build a RS spec motor providing you supply the case. It's more than this car is currently being offered for. The tail is worth $2500....

We tried to look at this car, since it's in the area. The guy was very unhelpful. He's a broker, bought the car in L.A. The car was yellow, now black. No documentation on the car, which makes me wonder how he knows all this work was done. Tried to arrange to go see it and possible pre-purchase inspection. He told my friend he wouldn't let him do a pre-purschase inspection. The car looks great but who knows. With no receipts to back it up makes me leary.

Very wrong, my friend. If it had a 3-liter in it, I'd say 15k is approaching high. But if that's the original 2.7 that's been upgraded to RS spec, I'd say 15k is a bargain by around five grand.

RS spec engines run MFI, not carbs. It's NOT a '74 Euro Carrera, it's a USA model that had engine modifications. Rebuilds and mods are only as good as the guy that did them. I'm usually suspicious of ads that tell you of a "recently rebuilt" engine...
it could be great, it could also mean that the rebuild was poorly done, the owner doesn't want to fork over for another rebuild, so he wants to dump the car. Been there, done that...with Detroit Iron. A machine shop screwed up...making the crank out of line. I didn't want to sue 'em or anything, I didn't want to buy another rebuildable block, I was just tired of messing with it, so sold the car at a bargain price...just to get rid of it! I did tell the buyer that the rebuild went badly, and that he could salvage a lot of parts, but I thought he'd want to look for another core motor. Not all sellers are as kind as I was.

No pre purchase inspection allowed? No sale...but that's just my opinion. I also hold the opinion that peanuts roasted & salted in the shell taste better than those from a jar or a can...

Good find Pwd - if that's the case, I'd pass on this.

there is a saying...if it didn't get in print, it didn't happen.

A shiny new paint job can cover a whole bunch of problems. Witness this thread

My comments....
1) No pre-inspection.... don't get within 100 miles of the car like many before have said. Add to this, the saleman's attitude.... forget it. Walk fast.

However, if 1) above was not the case and you could get a pre-inspection and the salesman was cool and not a smuck then....

2) If and it's a big if..... the body and the rest of the car are as nice as they look, and the engine checked out, I agree that $15K is a steal. What a great package, 74 US Carrera with low weight, Carrera flares and a factory ducktail, and a rippen' motor (~210HP).
3) Even with carbs, I'd still consider this an RS spec motor power wise. A motor like this in my opinion could only add to the value of the car. A 2.7CIS is nothing special unless you are concours-ing the car. I'd much rather have a motor in the back that has some "beans" in it.

Yah think ....LOL

As for a 74 Carrera. If you've seen Steve Wieners 74 Carrera. That's a car. Euro 2.7 MFI and twin plugged. It is a beautiful thing, even if it's Black. LOL.

I hate pictures on ebay, the cars always look pretty good when shot so far away. I would never buy a vehicle sight unseen unless I had some serious information and documentation to back it up. I travelled thousands of miles to check out a "deal" on a yellow 75 Carrera and it was photographed in such a way it looked great. When I got there that thing was not even drivable! and like 10 coats of paint. Buyer beware and thanks to sites like this it is great to get tips on some of these cars.
