Project Elephant - Ready for paint

I'm still at it.

No updates for a few days because it's been all detail work. Lot's of sanding and minor bodywork.

Bodywork takes a long time, a really long time! I've been working some serious late night, typically 1:00 am or so. I am exhausted, but still commited to meeting the goal.

I am a couple days behind schedule but I plan to make up some time this coming week.

I'm shooting paint tomorrow. The car is prepped and taped.

I still need to construct my make-shift spray booth, then the fun begins.

Keep up the good work - it could have been very tempting to scrimp on some of the unseen areas in order to keep closer to your schedule - glad you've rejected it & kept to your standards. Looking forward to seeing the final colour scheme as it's one that I was seriously considering for my car.

Great work Chuck. I can't wait to see the final paint. I am starting to fit my body panels this weekend. They are all fiberglass so I may have a bit of work to do. Then its a final prep for paint. I will use your project as motivation to get mine finished.

What sanding method did you use to tackle the tight areas like the doorjambs Chuck? Media blasting?

Just curious why you left the drivetrain in the car?

That's certainly going to look killer in the Gulf theme. Like you say, the contrast and how the colors complement each other is a great look.

When you get done with your make shift paint booth I would like to see some pictures of it and a description of how you built it. Eventually I will have to create something to paint my tub in also.

I didn't do any media blasting. That would be quick but I don't like the media getting everywhere and hiding in the nooks and crannies.

I took off the thickest undercoating with a heat gun and putty knife where accesible, then hit it with castrol purple a scrub brush and power washer to get out the rest. Repeat as needed. Repeat, repeat, and repeat again.

Then I used sandpaper mostly just hand-held because it is impossible to get a power sander into most of the jam.

Pat

I'll put pictures of the booth in the next update. Plan is to clean out the garage thoroughly removing as much dust as possible. Then walls and ceiling will be covered in polythene sheeting. A box fan will be fitted in one window to exhaust fumes, a furnace filter fitted in another window to provide a source of filtered air. I'll put one or two box fans inside with furnace filters attached to suck out floating particles.

The floor will be wet down to cut down dust.

I really have to commend Chuck, on even attempting this project in his shop. I'm not bashing it, but it is small. I'm sure some people on this board have larger bathrooms than his shop.

And Chuck, keep up the great work! You're an inspiration to all of us, and I can't wait to see it when it's done.

Very inspirational. Can't wait to see the finished project at Monterey.

(And I'm sure all of us are jealous of the fact that, for you, it's a completely deductable business expense! )

Chuck, are you going to apply a sealer before you shoot the car? I think it is the way to go, I have been using this Nason urethane based primer stuff on my yellowbird pieces. It goes on well and is hard as a rock. I found when shooting my new hood which was black and had the primer on the top, painting over the black stuff took forever and way too much paint compared to shooting the other side with the sealer primer stuff. plus you can watersand it to a smooth as glass finish. Just wish my painter put the extra day and effort to seal it and finish sand before the paint. I can see sand marks under certain light which drives me nuts!
take your time and be calm !

Don't you guys know size doesn't matter? It's all in the motion.

I am using a sealer first.

I didn't shoot paint today. Under the light of day and a good nights sleep I decided some more refining of the body was in order, which is now completed. I then spent a couple hours cleaning out the shop (good thing it's small) and converting it for spray booth duty.

Everything is taking longer than expected. My deadline is fast approaching.

It's ready to go tomorrow.
