Jb weld a alternator fan

I change the alternator belt on my 86 and found a groove around the nipple that the outer pulley sits on..
After rearranging the shims the outer pulley sit in that groove.
Can I use jb weld to fill the groove and sand it down to allow both the shims and pulley to fit properly?

Should I use 2 part or would putty be ok..
Putty definitely seems a little easier to use..

TIA for any recommendations..

But I'm leaning towards an epoxy of any kind isn't a good fix

The groove is not tightening the nut snug enough
I don’t believe JB is the answer, weld might be..

Well...I gue8that answers my question...
Unfortunately welding probably isn't an option (not many competent people in my hood)...
Anyone use an aftermarket fan?
Used ones seem a bit pricey for what it is..

The two flats on the fan hub are what make the fan, alternator, and outer pulley half rotate as one unit. If you don't have enough total washers in the stack, the cup washer won't get tight, because the biggish nut will run out of threads. The pulley half will then start carving up that area of the fan. At some point instead of flats there will be a carved circle, with no mechanical interlock holding the pulley half to the inner side, so fan slippage, low output from the alternator, bad things which get worse.

If you can reestablish a mechanical connection between the pulley halves, things should work - as long as the cup washer isn't distorted from wrenching on the nut, and you have the right number of shims in the stack - X on the inside, Y on the outside.. JB Weld doesn't seem to be up to that task, though. There are some holes in the pulley halves - maybe some use could be made of them to lock the halves together? Tap and a little short bolt or two?

Oherwise send it off to be welded and machined (if someone does that). Or get a replacement.

Walt...
When I replaced the belt there were actually 7 shims In place. Think it was 5 or 6 in the back and the rest In the front. I guess by replacing the belt and putting 3 front and 3 back, set the outer pulley in the groove...

Wonder if anyone has experience with aftermarket fans?
Used fans seem pretty expensive..especially with there own issues( broken blades, cracks, ect...)


How hard is it to remove the fan? Really don't want to have to pull the entire housing..

I can say that I have tried JB Weld for this issue in the past and regrettably it didn’t work for me very long. Really wasn’t enough surface for it to bond and it would end up coming off. Definitely caused because of an incorrect number of Total shims. As mentioned even if not used between the halves the rest still need to be added under the cup. There is a specific number which escapes my mind currently. Others will let us know the number.

Yeah, it's only supposed to be 6 shims..don't know where the extra 1 I had came from..

The fan is a bit tricky to remove. I like to use a chatter gun - an air chisel tool. I took a round shanked chisel or other work part and welded a thich washer to it, so the end was sort of wide and flat. While tugging by hand on the fan, hit the end of the shaft with the chatter gun. The vibration will help you pull it off. Or you could use a pointed end tool in the gun and center it on the end of the shaft. Will dimple the shaft a bit.

The fan has a Woodruf key in a slot in the shaft. It is held on pretty tight. What you don't want to do is any real prying on the blades of the fan. I think hands are best.

But there are guys who have done this hundreds of times, and doubtless have worked out good systems they might share. Bruce Anderson, who posts here often, is nearby in North Carolina. Or search for "fan removal" or something like that here.

Welding magnesium is not that difficult, go to your local welding supply and ask for a name I’m sure they’ll know somebody.

Want to thank everyone for there input...

I was fortunate enough to find someone local to weld the groove and machine it down..should get it back soon...

I also ordered a new outer pulley, the old one wasn't square anymore...
