Unhappy Crazy idea?

Has anyone ever done or heard of someone putting a 996 engine into a 993/964/911 before?

Yes someone I know (won't mention any names here!) just built a C2 Speedster with a 996 engine in it.
No comment though.....

Porsche did it...they just tweaked a few body panels to make it fit better.

Kelly Moss in Wisconsin did it to a 993. Was in Excellence w/in the past couple of months...too much money! Why not just build a monster air cooled motor?

Monster is the word. Porsche finally figured out that they would need to add water cooling to keep pace with the increase in displacement and horsepower, while keeping the powerplant fairly compact.

A powerful aircooled motor can be built and installed in a pre-1999 911 for a very nice combo. There are some guys here that have such a combo.

To put the 996 motor in a once aircooled chassis would yield a relatively low return compared to building a "monster" aircooler motor. Are you going to track it? What are your limitations outside of engineering (ie, rules and regulation?)

I think the Kelly Moss car was built claiming they needed to keep up with the watercooled ones, and they were talking about a track car that may have had some other limitiations. What do you need for a street car? If power to weight ratio is your concern, try the modified Beck Spyder with a 993 twin turbo motor. Then clean yourself off and get real. How much useable street power is enough?

An aircooled car chassis can be striped and ligthened quite a bit. Then add a nasty aircooler. Not enough? Then you need help.

If you have the money and you want to spend it, come over to my house with it. I bet your money ( ) that I can build you a car that will keep up with most water cooled street cars. How much money and time have you got?

Have BSME and too dumb to know I can't...will travel!

Talked a guy a few weeks ago who said the speedster guy gave up. It can't be done, from what I understand, without much more work than is feasible.

Sorry for the confusion gentlemen, i was just curious, not like i'd actually do it. If it was easy and not high in the cost area than maybe. But i find that from observing p-mechnics work on both cars (used to work for a shop some years back) that the air cooled cars, while needing more attention in the maintenence department, are simpler to work on then the liquid sibling now rolling the streets. And i know what potential these cars have, i've gone for a ride before in a supercharged carrera and watched a 700+rwhp 930 in action. So i am not unfamiliar, just curious, every engineer needs to spend sometime coming up with radical ideas every now and then.

I recall something else too, if i remember right the 962 had liquid cooled cylinders and heads that were electron-beam welded on and could run a phenomonal amount of boost. But were placed on a standard air-cooled block, ne1 ever attempt or ponder this as a possibility?

Seems the transplant has been done

How about Supercharged 3.8 V6?

how about the other way around...a air cooled in a 996 body...

(well I hate the 996 look)

but you may get better suspension...and be an experiment in what the modern 911's could have been...

plus without all the need for radiators, could clean up the front a little...hmmmmm

Thumbs up

If some have shoe-horned a Chevy small block in such a tight space, why not a 996 motor? A 962 motor would be cool, too, and I imagine whomever could afford to buy and install one could afford the high maintenance costs as well.
