How about Supercharged 3.8 V6?
Wayne (and everyone..)
What say you to a transplant? I'm thinking of a3.8liter GM v6 with supercharger (a la Grand Prix GTP or Regal GS)...makes 240hp, weighs much less than a chev v8....gobs of torque..... Anyone done this?

If you're going to make a pig's ear of your car, why not go the whole hog and put in a supercharged RX7 Rotary engine. I've heard of it being done on a VW beetle.

240 hp seems like a pretty small gain in exchange for all that work (fabbing a way to get it to mount in there, mating it to a 915, wiring it, plumbing an entire cooling system).

I'm going to put three BMW 1100cc oilheads in mine, end-to-end. Then I'll have a BMWPorsche flat six! Lessee, each one makes about 80HP, that'll give me 240 HP with no tuning! SWEET! Where's my welder????

I saw almost exactly what your talking about at Dunkels shindig this year. A black 76 w/ 3.8 turbo-Buick eng. There was a lot of plumbing and raditiors in the back seat w/ fans. The owner was very proud of his 1/4 mile times {can't remember how quick} but had never run a road course. Not my cup of tea, but someones got to do it . Now, if i did it ,i would use that turbine eng that Jay leno has in his mototcycle and drop it in a repro Speedster.

Or....How about a mighty 90hp flat 4 from a Subaru??
Those of you who have Wayne's 101 Projects book will see a picture of it near the back of the book. A classic example of an answer to a question no one is asking!

Alternatively, why not be a hero and complete the first 996 engine transplant to a 911?

It wouldn't be the first one...and unlike with the Buick option, you wouldn't have to drill three portholes in each of your quarter panels.

Joey, exactly what kind of cat are you? Oh...stray huh. No place else to go?
Cheers, VC, '89 3.2 PS, any other stupid ideas, post them up your arse. IMHO of course. For christ sakes "anyone done this?" What the f*ck do you think? Sure, done four of 'em this mornin', right after I redesigned the flux capacitor on the Delorian. |

Wow...poor guy. The flames are melting my monitor. Let's help the guy out.
Joe, there are a number of threads on this BBS regarding V8 conversions. And I suspect you'll have some of the same issues - plumbing the cooling system will likely be a challenge and the V design will raise your center of gravity and alter the handling of the car. As you can tell, you may also have to endure endless flames from purists. On the plus side, repairing an american engine will likely be cheaper than a german engine. MUCH cheaper. So I suppose it depends on what you want to achieve. If you want to take on an interesting and challenging engineering project, then a V6 transplant certainly qualifies and you can probably find helpful tips by searching the BBS archives for threads on the V8 conversions. If, on the other hand, you want lots of "go fast" power, then often an engine transplant from a newer Porsche will serve you well if not better. And don't listen to the flamers. Normally they're nice guys - but sometimes we get very protective of the marque.

All you clunkers that want to put a hopped up (anything but a flat six) in a 911 are sick in the head.
If the stock F-6 hp isn't enough for you, don't you realize that if you can hop up a V-6 or V-8 or I4, you just might be able to do the same to a flat six that already is in the car? If you can go get a garret turbo from the junkyard and "engineer" it on your 4-6-8-whatever, you could do the same to the "correct" engine! If you want to be creative, here is what you do: Get an early 911 (pre 73) is so-so shape. Take the engine apart, put in an early S crank and something less than 8.0:1 comp. 69-73 heads ported to 41mm and something like E cams. Then for the engineering part, pull the efi off something modern with 6 cylinders and borrow a ford or gm 3.8l supercharger. Figure out how to install it without cutting anything that shouldn't be cut and "build" the intake setup, intercool to if you wish. Now you should have a serious 300 hp with a flat torque curve. Guess what, you didn't cut up one of our precious, highly coveted automobiles! This put a different engine in a 911 ***** makes me sick

I would use the turbo GN motor lots of hop up parts.
You don't get bent over like ya do with Porsche parts. Besides real Porsches are water cooled and have the motors in the front (I4 or V-8). Porcupine. |

I'm not against V8 conversions, but the cars do lose some mystique. The 911 engine can be made to give you way more HP than a standard Chevy - there's a reason why Porsche won all of those races...

Wow, I was just joking around, but you flamethrower-wielding psychos are just plain nucking futs.
IT'S A CAR. Get a grip. Time to evaluate your priorities if you feel so strongly about it that you're flat-out insulting the poor guy.

Wayne - the point is MONEY. Sure you can make an N/A 911 engine put out as much power as a STOCK small block - IF YOU THROW ENOUGH MONEY AT IT.
Everyone knows a Porsche 911 should only be driven by a rich man (or woman). Heaven forbid that someone a bit less healed would raise an old junker from the dead to live a new life as a hybrid motor monster car. I would suggest that the hybrid motor swappers check out the V8 Porsche e-list site. You will find the information you crave without all the negativity. It's just a car.
