HP Junkies, 410hp

Finally got the car back last month, from having the turbo installed, and have since put on 1400 miles.

The particulars;
1990 C2 Tiptronic
Protomotive stage one turbo
Intercooler
8.0-1 cr
Tial wastegate @ .7 bar
993 sleeves
Flycut heads
Rings
965 Turbo S tail

=410hp and 418 ft/lbs

The car drives pretty much the same as before below 3400rpm, but after that I need to hold on tight. The power comes on quickly, but very smoothly. The engine idles well, too.

I've never been in a car with this much power, ever, and it is quite thrilling. It now feels like what I always thought a 911 would feel like.

On a side note, I did my first autocross last Sunday and brought my son along. He worked one of the corners and commented that he could hear the BOV/wastgate as I accelerated along the fast part of the track. He was really loving hearing it, but not nearly as much as I loved driving it. I'm hooked, and I think he will be soon.

Juan & Merv, add me to the club. Todd told me I can add a second fuel pump, bigger injectors more boost and reprogrammed chip for 560hp....maybe next year.

I hear good things about Protomotive. Your car looks great and that's a lot of HP with the top down. Where is the roll-bar?

Welcome to the dark side and enjoy the ride!

That is a VERY sweet ride. Most people would say "awww" at the tiptronic, but I actually kind of like it. One of the fastest 996 turbos that hangs out at a local car meet has a tip and now I think they're a nice alternative to sticking with the manual. Enjoy your car.

Thanks for the good words.

The DAS rollbar is definitely my next upgrade.

I'll be honest, I'm hooked on the tiptronic. When I want to get up and go, I just plant the throttle and watch the speedo/rpm's rise--it's idiot proof. Todd told me they've done some pretty high hp engines mated to the tip and they perform well.

Man I love it.

A tippy and a cab to boot. Excellent!

Just love it when people do what they want rather than listen to the naysayers.

Roll on next year and more hp - now you've done it

Cheers,
Mark

Beautiful car and nice job.

I wouldn't succumb to the temptation for even more power. You must be right on the edge of the tiptronic torque capacity already and since you also autocross the car, extra power might just break something. IIRC, I think Porsche use to rate the tip at 300hp max!

What wheels and tires are you running? Including aspect ratio? Pretty mean looking.

Also, is the car sitting high at the front?

The wheels are 18" Techarts with Yokohama AVS dB, 275-35-18 rear and 225-40-18 front. The tires are great daily drivers, but don't grip well at the track. Only the one event last week really tore up the rears. Once they wear out, I'll get something more appropriate. I was looking at Tirerack at Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 tires that got pretty high marks and the price was not unreasonable (265-35-18 for $207).

The intercooler was done by the engine builder
Protomotive

I asked Todd at Protomotive about the longevity of the tip with increased hp/torque and he told me he's had customers with the tip reaching much greater hp/torque without compromising longevity. I'll certainly keep up with prevetative maintenance, but if it fails then a new tip will be a future project.

The front is a little taller than I'd like, even though it's adjusted to the lowest setting. H&R's with Bilsteins will probably happen once the tires wear out and certainly after the roll bar. The 225's in front will fit fine in the wheel well once lowered, but the rears will have to be a little narrower.

Happy Easter,
Gary

My wife is an OU alum, I'm in the Air Force stationed in Az with CA plates. Sometimes I forget where I belong.

The wheels were originally silver and I had them powder coated black about 1 1/2 years ago. The powder coating has held up real well.

How long did the transplant take? Any surprise expenses above and beyond the basic kit?
