What am I doing wrong - rear bumper guard removal
OK guys - once the nuts from these bolts are removed it should just pop off, right?

the paint holds them in place often. put the nuts back on the bolts and hammer with a block of wood. it will more than likely remove portions of the bumper paint.

I just removed mine with the bumper off of the car. It took several wacks with a BFH and it cam right off. Keep hitting - they will eventually loosen and fall off. Be careful to use a rubber mallet or the wooden end of the hammer so as not to damage the threads.

I would say a couple of taps with a brass hammer or deadblow hammer should work..

took mine off last week...fell off
so what's going on as replacements? I was actually thinking of a vinyl sticker in the shape of the outline in black (my car also Guards red) - then I read about the ends of the rubber strip coming loose and I thought I should make some sort of "cap" to hold those down.... what's your plan?

Thanks guys - rapped on it a wood block and a hammer and that worked.
I was surprised by how heavy they are. |

Before you put them back on check to see if you have sag on any of them, if so tweeking them a bit will help form to the valance better and restrict debris getting up it.
Yes those suckers are indeed heavy, they have a steel/metal frame inside them.

has anyone ever cut a few inches off one in an effort to lighten it and yet keep the original look?

From the bottom or sides? I guess after cutting you can use a hot iron to smooth it out???
But how to deal with the metal frame? One of mine rusted, I removed all the rusted metal and filled with sealant then used my heat gun to form the bottom to seal up to my valance like the good one.

mine are MINTY - so I wont experiment but I was just trying to come up with an easy lightweight version that kept the hold down bits for the rubber trim...as of right now I am considering a sticker...and some sort of clamp for the rubber
There is a guy offering machined plastic ones but I never got a firm price and then didnt care much for the look anyhow....not sure where I will end up but hope its not the ghetto ![]()

+1 on the weight of the bumper guards, then you add the weight of the muffler heat shield it really adds up. I left the muffler heat shield off when I installed my M&K muffler. Too bad there's not a good source for the European bumperettes.... that won't break the bank.

There are quite a few good ideas in the "official modified bumper thread".
The official modified bumpers thread!!! While I left them off completely (my car is shown in p. 7 of that thread), lightweight (hollow) copies made from wood, primed and painted semi-gloss black is an option I considered. |

1987 Carrera Bumper Guards
I want to change the bumper guards ( the fat ones) off my 1987 Carrera to the narrow Euro bumper guards.
I needs some help!!! - First - what bumper guards do I actually need? Is it the bumper guards off a 1974 911 - part # 911-505-342-00 or a different bumper guard part # 930-505-031.00. I am getting conflicting information on what bumber guards I actually need. Has anyone actually done this project on a 1987-1989 Carrera? I would very much appreciate some advice. Thanks!!! |

You need the 930 PN. They fit the Carrera valance
I did the project on my 86 Carrera and it looks great. You wil be left with two holes on either side. You can either use plastic caps from home depot or aluminum weld and re paint. I got euro Carrera bumper guards in the UK for about $80. |

1987 bumper guards
Thanks sm70911 - How difficult was it to drill into the bumper?
Did you use a regular drill and bit ? I actually tried to see how difficult it would be and it seems like it would be impossible to get through the bumper. Any suggestions? Thanks! |
