911SC Front Tire Size Question..???

I have a stock '79 911SC and am considering purchasing an already mounted/balanced used set of Fuchs for autocrossing. The catch is that the wheels are supposedly (all 4) 16x6 mouted with 225/50 tires. Seems like this is fine for the back but may rub in the front. I'm also concerned that this will provide a less-than-adequate autocross setup.

Anyone have any knowledge or experience with this?

Thanks,
Mike

225 is too big for a 6" rim.

I wouldn't do it.....

They will rub in front, IF, you have euro height, or less than stiff shocks. Plus....a 225 on a 6 is a little big. 7s are recommended.

Personally, I would use 6s in the front and 7s in the rear with 205s and 225s.....that combo was the stock option for an SC, 15s were stock.

There is a reason they went with different sized wheels for the SC. Something to do with the oversteer.....

An "upgrade" would be 16x7 and 8s....225/45 and 245/45.....

Thanks mike. This is the feeling I was having as well. This setup DOES work on a 914 (w/ fender roll?) so if you know anyone with one, there is great "buy it now" on eBay for all 4 Fuchs w/ new Kuhmo VictoRacers for $550. Great deal.
Anyway, thanks again.

Mike

I use 225x50 on my 82 SC and it does not rub. I use offset rims.

if you went 16/7 and 16/8, wouldn't the front be 225/50/16 and rear 245/45/16 (ie the narrower front higher profile)? I know on my "stock" 6/7 it is 205/55/16 and 225/50/16.

Also Mike, remember that oversteer is a feature, not a bug.

225/50 is the "correct size" for 7's but I there are a few people using the 225/45 for a little more clearance when used in the front.

For optimum performance & tire geometry (IMO), you would still want to stick with 205's & 225's on 7's & 8's. The only place for a 245 is on a 9" rim (again, IMO).

Yeah, but they went from the Short wheel base, to the long model, then to larger tires in the rear to try to lessen the effect.....some oversteer can be compensated for and used.....one that snaps yer head off, is BAD....
