heater blower motor died

i just discovered my heater blower not running when I lift up on the heater controls. its a 1983 SC

i took it out of the car to check my wiring repair i did last spring. wires looks ok

however, the fan wheel (i think its called) is not spinning freely. i dont remember how this is supposed to feel when trying to turn it by hand. it feels pretty locked up. im referring to the silver wheel the arrow is pointing to below

can anyone offer some guidance on how to proceed with this?

I see there are motors available for about $80 which requires you to use your blower assembly and there are new blower motors with the entire assembly for around $325

anyone make this repair?

Most people call the blower wheel a squirrel cage. I'd pull the assembly and verify the motor is frozen. If so, just buy a new motor. It's easy to swap over the squirrel cage and install in the existing housing.

took it further apart and discovered a bolt holding it together had worked itself out and was wedged up against the fan wheel. fixed this and it spins freely now

unfortunately, once reinstalled, theres still nothing happening when i lift the levers. no sound at all from the motor

i checked all fuses and dont see any that are blown so....im guessing this is just dead. i dont see anything obviously wrong with it but i have no idea

Unfortunately the blower motors on our beloved 911s are really crappy quality. They can't really be rebuilt, just replaced. You might be able to take it apart and lube the bearings, and get it to work for a short while, but it will fail soon.

Have you verified you have 12V at the connector when levers are pulled up? My experience has been that when Porsche blower motors go bad, the are corroded stuck. If you can spin by hand, I'm not sure it's bad.

The forums had a couple sellers just last week. I believe I saw 55 shipped for one. I sold one off my 82 motor to a local who actually posted the WTB ad for $60. We met up and talked about our P cars for a few minutes.

In the engine compartment, the motor gets heat soaked even when it's not being used; when it is, hot air's routed thru it in addition. Not surprising when it fails after how many years ?

well, i forgot to check fuses in engine compartment.....when i did, i found a blown fuse...the middle fuse

ill replace it and see if the motor runs

i think what happened is, the bolt backed out and jammed the hamster wheel causing the fuse to blow.....

if im lucky, i can get some more use out of the blower
