Been working on this car for so long...
... that it feels like I’m starting to lose my mind.
I’ve refinished my interior and installed some upgrade rear shelf speakers. But I can’t find the screws/bolts that appear to go in the two holes shown in my pic below - nor do I remember removing them and putting them somewhere. So I thought, “No biggie, I’ll just find them in the PET and order new ones” BUT they don’t even show up in the PET?! I don’t even know exactly what I’m looking for, could someone please enlighten me? Thanks guys. ![]() Last edited by mtl911sc; 11-15-2020 at 09:53 AM.. |

Thanks but the holes you’re referring to are on the outside in the pic below. The ones I’m referring to on the inside seem to help support the parcel shelf.

Hmm maybe there was and the previous owner deleted them? The rear has never had belts as long as I've owned the car (over 14 years) but now that you mention it, there should have been.

There were both two-point and three-point rear belts for the 911SC, but that wouldn’t explain the large round indents in the leather nor do I think the holes are properly positioned as seat belt anchors.

that rear speaker shelf doesn't look factory to me. for the factory it would have been integral with the vertical part that covers the area behind the seat backs. could those have been some aftermarket hardware used to hold the upper speaker panel to the lower vertical panel, or maybe a PO bolted in some speaker boxes or something similar?

it appears to me that your rear window is out?
if indeed so, better install window first and then install interior

Gotcha & thanks, was installing the speakers and wiring them up before reinstalling the glass. That's when I realized that whatever screws/bolts into those two holes helps prop up and support the parcel shelf so that it doesn't sag or angle too much towards the seats. The speakers should actually be sitting a bit more horizontal than they currently are.

here are a few pics of the one from my 84. the vertical was in good shape but the leather had shrunk and warped the top where the speakers go. I ended up adding a piece of Masonite and thin layer of foam to the top section, and then redyeing the new leather to match the original brown. that is why in the front view you will see an addition seam above the top screw holes. ![]() ![]() |

Ok thanks 76FJ55, makes sense. Perhaps the PO had somehow modified the panel with the two holes for whatever reason. This is what my lower panel behind the seat backs looks like. I painted the panels with SEM Classic Coat which is why the rear of the panel looks sprayed... went from beige to black.

Agree.....that is NOT how my rear deck looked when I disassembled the complete interior !!!

if you look at the last image you posted it looks like there are two holes in the top edge of the lower panel that would likely line up with the two mystery holes in the speaker shelf from your original post. maybe the PO separated the two sections and then had them bolted back together in some fashion at those locations?

Absolutely possible...
So what I've come to realize is that there is no specific attachment point between the upper portion on the parcel shelf i.e. where the speakers mount and the body of the car. The only attachment points are the center "tab" behind the lower section and then the two screws at the very bottom of the corners of the lower piece.

That sounds backwards. I am far from an upholstery expert but any window can be removed or installed with the entire interior in place. In fact, the windows have to come out to put in the headliner. Am I confused? I thought that the windows were one of the last things to do.

Wouldn't the parcel shelf get in the way of pulling the cord out from the bottom of the glass when you're in the process of installing the rubber seal onto the window frame?

I imagine it could be done either way, but it is definitely easier to access the rear glass with the parcel shelf removed.
Unlike the dash which has fasteners that are impossible to access with the windshield installed, the parcel shelf slides into position at the base of the window and all the fasteners are located in the rear seat area. |
